Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen suffered another bitter defeat after being eliminated in the second round of the WTA 500 Charleston Open 2026. This result extends the negative trend shadowing her performance on the elite WTA Tour this season.
Competing at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 1 evening WIB, Janice couldn't match the aggressive play of home representative McCartney Kessler. She lost in straight sets 2-6, 1-6 in a relatively one-sided match.
The match was briefly competitive early in the first set when both players broke serve in the opening two games.

However, momentum quickly shifted when Janice fell behind 1-4. Pressure from Kessler made it difficult for the Indonesian player to develop her game. The first set ended with home-court dominance.
Entering the second set, the situation changed little. Janice failed to capitalize on two break point opportunities in the opening game – crucial moments that could have been turning points. Instead, she fell behind 0-2 and became increasingly pressured by her opponent's consistency.
A series of unforced errors caused her to lose rhythm. Janice managed only one game before Kessler secured victory with full control until the match's conclusion.
This defeat continues Janice's unsatisfactory results in previous tournaments, including the WTA 500 Merida, WTA 1000 Indian Wells, and WTA 1000 Miami, where she also suffered early exits.
Not only in singles, Janice also failed to shine in doubles. Partnering with Aldila Sutjiadi, they fell to top seeds Aleksandra Krunic/Zhang Shuai in a tight battle 6-7, 5-7.
