FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed Iran will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, whatever the off-field situation. He added there is no room for alternative scenarios.
Amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, speculation about Iran's potential absence from the 2026 World Cup had surfaced.
“We want them to play, they will play at the World Cup. There is no Plan B or C or D; Plan A is the only plan,” Infantino stated as quoted by ESPN.

He made this statement directly during a meeting with Iran's squad and local Football federation officials in Antalya, Turkey, amidst preparations for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico starting June 11th.
In the meeting, Infantino also emphasized FIFA's full commitment to ensuring Iran can compete under the best conditions, despite the shadow of conflict affecting their region.
“FIFA will continue supporting the team to ensure optimal conditions as they prepare for the World Cup,” Infantino wrote in an Instagram post.
This firm stance alleviates concerns that arose due to the geopolitical situation, including the conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
Iran is scheduled to play two group stage matches in Inglewood, California, and one match in Seattle. Previously, Iranian authorities had proposed moving the matches to Mexico citing security reasons.
However, Infantino reiterated that no schedule changes will be made.
Amid global uncertainty, Iran chooses to remain focused on Football. Preparations continue, including a closed-door friendly match that ended in a resounding 5-0 victory over Costa Rica.
Beyond just a match, that moment also became a symbol of solidarity. Iranian players and officials carried a humanitarian message by showing support for conflict victims, including displaying photos of children affected by airstrikes.
As one of Asia's leading forces, Iran is still viewed as a serious contender to progress far. They are grouped with New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.
