From Immigration to Hotel Cancellations: Major Challenges Ahead of World Cup 2026

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, shadows off the field are beginning to Draw attention. Not tactics or player composition, but immigration policies and logistics potentially impacting the course of the biggest World Football tournament.

The United States (US) will host the majority of 2026 World Cup matches.  With 78 out of 104 matches held in the US, stable entry access is crucial for the success of the tournament also involving Canada and Mexico.

Concerns are rising in the US about the impact of immigration crackdowns on the arrival of international players and supporters. 

This situation even prompted New Jersey Congresswoman Nellie Pou to introduce legislative action. This signals the issue has transcended the realm of Sports and entered the sphere of public policy.

Amid this uncertainty, FIFA's decision to cancel thousands of hotel reservations adds new worries. 

A report by The Philadelphia Inquirer mentioned the cancellation of 2,000 rooms in Philadelphia, with similar steps occurring in other host cities.

This move follows a major earlier reduction in Mexico City, where about 40% of FIFA's Hotel Bookings were canceled. 

Although internal sources called this part of routine contractual adjustments, the scale and timing raise questions.

For host cities, this decision isn't just a number. Hotels, restaurants, and the Tourism sector relying on a visitor surge now face new uncertainty. 

Moreover, delays in federal funding for security are forcing cities like Boston, Miami, and San Francisco to scale back Fan Festivals, crucial spaces for ticketless fans.
