Iraq's national team securing the final ticket to the 2026 World Cup comes with a significant challenge. The Lions of Mesopotamia are confirmed to be in the "group of hell" after the draw placed them alongside global giants in the group stage.
Iraq became the last country to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, after eliminating Bolivia with a 2-1 scoreline in the inter-confederation play-off final at Monterrey Stadium, Canada.
In the 2026 World Cup group stage, Iraq will face a tough test because the qualification slot from the inter-confederation play-offs places them in Group I, which features two-time champions France, as well as Senegal and Norway.

Group I is predicted to showcase fierce competition. Iraq arrives as a new Asian force, but they must face the squad depth of elite teams from Europe and Africa.
France remains the top favorite with a lineup of world-class players like Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise, William Saliba, Desire Doue, and Mike Maignan.
Les Bleus also carry the major mission of redeeming their failure in the 2022 World Cup final.
From Africa, Senegal is a team experienced in major tournaments. Names like Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly form the backbone of a team proven capable of reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Final.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian National Team returns to the world stage with their Golden Generation. The sharpness of Erling Haaland, the creativity of Martin Odegaard, and the support of players like Alexander Sorloth pose a serious threat to teams in this group.
Beyond Group I, the new tournament format with 48 nations also presents an interesting competitive landscape. Hosts Mexico occupy Group A alongside South Africa, South Korea, and the Czech Republic.
Canada is in Group B with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar, and Switzerland.
While the United States is placed in Group D with Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey.
Defending champions Argentina are grouped in Group J with Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian National Team will face Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in Group C.
Germany, in Group E, is challenged by Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico starting June 12th.
