Indonesian National Team Defender Calvin Verdonk had to settle for watching the match from the bench as Lille OSC suffered a 0-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the first leg of the 2025/26 Europa League Round of 16.
Playing at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Friday, March 13, 2026, early morning WIB, Lille coach Bruno Genesio did not field Verdonk. The left-back position was entrusted to Romain Perraud.
Throughout the match, Verdonk did not even get a chance to play, while Lille had to accept the bitter reality after conceding one goal in the second half.

The only winning goal for the visiting team was scored by English striker Ollie Watkins in the 61st minute.
Aston Villa appeared more aggressive with more dominant ball possession. Unai Emery's team continuously pressed Lille's defensive line. The hosts were still able to contain the attacks until the first half ended goalless.
The deadlock was finally broken in the second half. In the 61st minute, Watkins' header sailed past the reach of Lille goalkeeper, Berke Özer. 1-0 for Aston Villa.
Trailing by one goal, Lille increased the intensity of their attacks. However, they failed to score until the final whistle blew.
With this defeat, Lille must work harder in the second leg at Villa Park, Aston Villa's home ground, on March 20.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa only needs a draw to advance to the Quarter-Finals.
