Two Indonesian National Team players faced different fates on the European stage during the 2025/26 Europa League final matchday. Calvin Verdonk helped guide Lille to the playoffs, while Dean James had to accept the bitter reality after Go Ahead Eagles were eliminated from the competition.

Lille secured their ticket to the Europa League playoffs after a dramatic 1-0 win over Freiburg at the Stade Pierre Mauroy on Friday, January 30, 2026 WIB. Olivier Giroud's injury-time penalty goal decided Les Dogues' passage to the knockout phase.

Calvin Verdonk started and played a crucial role in Lille's left defensive sector. The Indonesian national team left-back performed solidly from the opening minutes before being substituted in the 82nd minute, contributing to the team's balance in this vital match.

This victory saw Lille finish 18th in the final league phase standings with 12 points, securing their place in the Europa League playoffs.

Despite the loss, Freiburg still advanced directly to the Round of 16 after securing seventh place with 17 points.

Freiburg, already safe, played without pressure and didn't force attacks. Conversely, Lille took the initiative from the start to keep their knockout phase hopes alive.

The hosts created several chances, including through Hakon Arnar Haraldsson and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, but Freiburg Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu's resilience kept the score level.

The situation changed in the 74th minute when Max Eggestein was shown a red card, giving Lille a numerical advantage.

Lille's pressure finally paid off in injury time. Matias Fernandez-Pardo was brought down in the penalty box.

Olivier Giroud successfully converted the penalty kick to secure a 1-0 victory until the final whistle blew.

Meanwhile, a different fate befell Dean James with Go Ahead Eagles. The Dutch side failed to advance to the playoffs after a goalless draw against Braga at De Adelaarshorst Stadium early Friday morning WIB.

Dean James started and was entrusted with the left-back position from the first minute in this do-or-die match

Eagles needed a win to keep their qualification hopes alive but struggled to penetrate Braga's defense despite applying pressure.

The match was tight with few clear-cut chances. After the game was briefly halted due to supporter fireworks, both teams remained deadlocked until the end.

Dean James, who played disciplined defense on the left flank, was substituted in the 90th minute. The goalless draw confirmed Go Ahead Eagles' elimination from the Europa League.
