The security situation in West Asia is starting to directly impact preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Iraq Football Association has officially requested a postponement of the intercontinental play-off matches from FIFA.
This request follows the deterioration of the security situation in West Asia. The United States-Israel aggression against Iran has impacted various activities, including international football.
This situation also relates to the 2026 World Cup, as the United States is one of the hosts of the tournament alongside other countries in North America. On the other hand, Iran has already secured its ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

However, amidst the turbulent geopolitical situation, the Iranian National Team has not confirmed whether they will still participate in the tournament.
This uncertainty affects the landscape of Asian Football, with various parties awaiting Iran's official decision and the possibility of a replacement nation.
Amidst this situation, the Iraqi National Team is also directly affected. Iraq is the next team from the Asian zone based on the 2026 World Cup Qualification results and is scheduled to play in the intercontinental play-off in March 2026.
The match is planned to take place in Mexico. However, the team's travel plans face serious obstacles because Iraq's airspace has been unusable for flights in recent weeks.
Iraq's geographical location is between the conflict zones of Israel and Iran, leading to the temporary closure of air routes.
On Monday, March 8, 2026, the Iraq Football Association submitted an official request to FIFA to postpone the play-off match.
"Iraq has sent an official request to postpone the World Cup Play-off match," reported the British media, The Guardian.
"Around half of the Iraqi squad is in Baghdad and cannot travel, while coach Graham Arnold is stuck in Dubai."
As a temporary solution, FIFA proposed the option of Traveling overland from Baghdad to Istanbul in Turkey. This route was estimated to take about 25 hours before the team could continue by flight to Mexico.
However, this solution was not agreed to by the Iraqi side. The overland journey was deemed risky because it would have to pass through the northern regions of the country.
"FIFA asked the Iraqi players to travel overland from Baghdad to Istanbul, a difficult journey through the north of the country which is under attack."
"(Coach) Arnold is understood to have told the Iraqi FA he would not allow his players to travel overland while the conflict was ongoing."
Amidst this uncertainty, another possible scenario has emerged. Iraq has a chance to play directly in the 2026 World Cup if Iran is absent from the tournament.
If that happens, the United Arab Emirates National Team could potentially replace Iraq's position in the intercontinental play-off match.
