The impressive run of Manchester United finally came to an end. In a tense match at St James' Park on Thursday, March 5, 2026, early morning WIB, the Red Devils fell 1-2 to Newcastle United in matchday 29 of the 2025/26 Premier League.
This marked MU's first defeat since being managed by Michael Carrick. Before facing Newcastle, Carrick had overseen seven matches with MU, achieving an impressive record of six wins and one Draw.
Ironically, the defeat occurred while MU had a numerical advantage for nearly half the match. The Magpies were forced to play with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card just before halftime.

However, it was precisely under this pressure that the home team showed character and punished the visitors' complacency.
Early Pressure and Penalty Drama
Newcastle started the match with high aggression. Within the first four minutes, they signaled their threat when Kieran Trippier's long ball hit the post before being cleared by MU's defense.
The visitors responded with a long-range effort from Matheus Cunha, but it sailed over. MU's best chance of the first half came from Bryan Mbeumo's acceleration, culminating in a shot by Kobbie Mainoo.
However, Aaron Ramsdale reacted smartly to parry the ball. Cunha had another golden opportunity but failed to capitalize.
The situation changed drastically just before halftime. Newcastle lost Jacob Ramsey to a second yellow card. Playing against 10-man Newcastle should have been a turning point for MU. Instead, the opposite happened.
The referee pointed to the spot after Bruno Fernandes fouled Anthony Gordon in the penalty area. Gordon stepped up as the executioner and calmly beat Senne Lammens with a shot down the middle. 1-0 to the hosts.
Quick Response and Intense Second Half
Newcastle's lead lasted only three minutes. From a Free-kick situation, Bruno Fernandes delivered an accurate cross into the box. Casemiro headed home, leveling the score at 1-1 before the break.
Entering the second half, the match's logic seemed reversed. Newcastle, down to 10 men, remained brave and pressed high. Anthony Gordon nearly scored a second with a close-range flick, but the ball went wide.
MU tried to leverage their numerical advantage. Leny Yoro's header, Manuel Ugarte's chance, and Joshua Zirkzee's attempt all failed to breach Newcastle's solid defense and Ramsdale's resilience under the bar.
Osula Ends MU's Positive Run
Just as the match seemed destined for a Draw, late drama unfolded in the 90th minute. Substitute William Osula produced a stunning individual run, driving into the penalty area before curling a shot into the bottom corner of MU's goal.
That goal sealed a 2-1 victory for Newcastle and halted the unbeaten run of Manchester United.
This result leaves MU in third place in the Standings with 51 points, level with fourth-placed Aston Villa. However, their lead is now just three points over Chelsea and Liverpool, lurking in fifth and sixth with 48 points.
Meanwhile, Newcastle climbed to 12th position with 39 points.
