The race for the top of the English Premier League is heating up after two crucial matches played on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Liverpool and Arsenal both secured important victories, albeit with different dramas.

Liverpool had to work hard before defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground Stadium, Nottingham. The lone goal was scored by Alexis Mac Allister in the 90+7th minute, securing three crucial points for The Reds, as noted by the Premier League.

This result keeps Liverpool in sixth place in the English Premier League Standings with 45 points from 27 matches. They have the same points as Chelsea in fourth place and Manchester United in fifth, but trail both rivals on goal difference. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest remains stuck in 17th place with 27 points from 27 games.

From the start of the match, Forest appeared aggressive. Callum Hudson-Odoi threatened, but his chance was thwarted by Liverpool Goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Elliot Anderson also had a golden opportunity, but his shot missed the target.

Liverpool only increased their attacking intensity in the second half. Curtis Jones unleashed a dangerous shot, but Nottingham goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega, made a crucial save.

Drama struck in the 90th minute when Liverpool thought they had scored, but the goal was overruled after a VAR review showed Mac Allister handled the ball. When the match looked set to end in a draw, Mac Allister finally became the match-winner with his goal in the 90+7th minute, pouncing on a rebound in front of goal.

In another match, Arsenal dominated the North London Derby by thrashing Tottenham 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London. This victory further solidified Arsenal's position at the top of the table.

Two goals from Eberechi Eze and two others from Viktor Gyokeres left Tottenham powerless, despite briefly equalizing through Randal Kolo Muani, as reported by the Premier League.

The additional three points mean Arsenal lead the standings with 61 points from 28 matches, five points clear of Manchester City in second place. Tottenham themselves are still stuck in 16th place.

Arsenal took the lead in the 32nd minute after Bukayo Saka's pass was converted by Eberechi Eze. However, Spurs needed only two minutes to level the score at 1-1 through an individual effort by Randal Kolo Muani.

Entering the second half, Arsenal regained the lead in the 47th minute through a powerful strike from Viktor Gyokeres outside the penalty box. Spurs thought they had pulled one back through Kolo Muani, but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

Arsenal extended their lead in the 61st minute. Eze scored his second goal of the match by tapping the ball in front of the Spurs goal, making it 3-1. In second-half stoppage time, Gyokeres secured a resounding 4-1 victory with his second goal in the 90+4th minute.

This victory underscores Arsenal's Consistency in the pursuit of the English League title, while Liverpool keeps their hopes alive of breaking into the top four.
