Liverpool had to swallow a bitter pill in front of their own supporters after suffering a dramatic defeat to Manchester City in the 25th week of the English Premier League 2025/2026. Playing at Anfield Stadium on Sunday, February 8, 2026, The Reds lost 1-2 after their lead vanished in the final minutes of the match.

From the opening whistle, the duel unfolded at a high tempo. Manchester City immediately posed threats through the movement of Erling Haaland, though his initial chances were still contained by Alisson Becker. Liverpool responded with neat combination play, relying on Florian Wirtz's creativity and Hugo Ekitike's aggressive runs. However, City's disciplined backline kept the first half goalless.

Entering the second half, the intensity increased significantly. Liverpool appeared more pressing and finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. Dominik Szoboszlai made the difference with a powerful free-kick execution that Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to read. The goal ignited Anfield's atmosphere and seemingly paved the way for a home victory.

Unfortunately, that lead couldn't be maintained until the end. Manchester City demonstrated champion mentality by rallying during the crucial phase. Bernardo Silva netted the equalizer in the 84th minute after capitalizing on a scramble in Liverpool's penalty area. Momentum shifted entirely to the visitors.

The drama peaked during injury time. Erling Haaland's penalty conversion in the 90+3rd minute sealed the victory and silenced the Anfield crowd.

This result solidified Manchester City's second place in the provisional Standings with 50 points, trailing leaders Arsenal by six points. Meanwhile, Liverpool remained stuck in sixth place with 39 points, four points behind Chelsea in the top-five zone.

Next week, Liverpool are scheduled to visit Sunderland's headquarters, while Manchester City will host Fulham in efforts to maintain pressure at the top of the English Premier League Standings.
