Something interesting stands out in the list of the world's coolest neighborhoods released by international lifestyle magazine TimeOut. Among names like Tokyo, London, Paris, and New York appears one instantly familiar to Jakarta residents: Kemang.
For many, Kemang isn’t just an area in South Jakarta. It’s a symbol of urban lifestyle, where local culture meets global creativity.
Once known as a Betawi village, this neighborhood has evolved into one of the capital’s liveliest hubs—and now, the world acknowledges it.

According to TimeOut on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, they’ve spent eight years searching for the coolest neighborhoods in major global cities.
Judging criteria included culture, community, livability, nightlife, street life, contemporary vibe, plus food and drinks.
They discovered diverse areas: some village-like with tight-knit communities, revitalized downtown cores, and former industrial zones turned creative districts.
In 2025, Kemang ranked 28th on TimeOut’s list of 39 coolest neighborhoods, beating Sheung Wan (Hong Kong) and Mont Kiara (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).
TimeOut’s list featured iconic global spots like Jimbocho (Tokyo), Camberwell (London), Avondale (Chicago), Menilmontant (Paris), Nakatsu (Osaka), and Little River (Miami).
Why Kemang?
TimeOut described Kemang as a laidback, refreshing area south of Jakarta’s Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD).
Its location is strategic—close to business and entertainment hubs—yet with a far more relaxed atmosphere.
Kemang is a space where art, cuisine, and community thrive together.
Its creative vibe radiates from scattered art galleries, design stores, and indie boutiques.
The neighborhood hosts artists, expatriates, creatives, and young entrepreneurs seeking inspiration.
Culinary-wise, Kemang Raya and Bangka streets are paradises. At dusk, dozens of street food stalls line sidewalks, luring passersby with enticing aromas.
From traditional Betawi dishes to international cuisine and aesthetic cafés, everything exists here.
SCBD might be the city’s party central, but Kemang offers relaxed nighttime charm.
Hanging out at coffee shops, catching live music at intimate bars, or strolling to soak up street energy—Kemang delivers it all.
TimeOut even recommends spending an entire day exploring Kemang. Meaning: it’s not just a residential area or dining spot, but a destination worthy of discovery—like a mini-city within Jakarta.
