Significant Economic Impact
Mexico's Ministry of Tourism projects the 2026 FootGolf World Cup will generate total spending of $7.7 million USD (approximately 145 million pesos).
Of this amount, $7.2 million USD (135 million pesos) is estimated to flow directly into Acapulco.
Around 1,500 international tourists are predicted to attend with an average stay of 11 nights, creating over 8,000 hotel room nights at double occupancy rates.
These figures confirm sport tourism's role as an engine for the city's economic recovery.
From Tapalpa to the World Stage
FootGolf was first played in Tapalpa, Jalisco, two decades ago. Since then, this sport combining football techniques and golf precision has grown rapidly, establishing an international federation and global competition calendar.
For Mexico, hosting the World Cup carries both historical and strategic significance. The tournament is part of the National Sports Tourism Strategy, targeting over 100 sporting events by 2025 and exceeding 200 events by 2026.
Marte Luis Molina Orozco, General Director of Social Destination Management, representing Mexico's Minister of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, emphasized the tournament's role in Acapulco's revival.
"This World Cup will not only attract tourists but also democratize sports, creating space for communities, inclusion, and new experiences," he stated as quoted by isportconnect.
Promoting Inclusivity and Women's Participation
General Director of the Mexican FootGolf Federation and tournament organizer, Fernando Name Guzzy, highlighted FootGolf's accessibility to all demographics, including growing female athlete participation.
"FootGolf creates opportunities for everyone, and in this edition we're also committed to strengthening the women's category, which stands out for its technique and talent," he said.
The 2026 FootGolf World Cup will feature Men's, Women's, Senior, and Senior+ categories, underscoring the sport's broad appeal across ages and genders.
Global Recognition for Acapulco
The International FootGolf Federation (FIFG), through its president Aleksander Kravanja, commended Mexico for winning the bid against competitors like the United Arab Emirates and Sweden.
He cited organizational standards and infrastructure readiness as key factors in Acapulco's selection, reinforcing the city's international image as a world-class destination.
Infrastructure Ready, Tourism Reviving
Undersecretary of Tourism Promotion for Guerrero State, Emilio Vásquez Villanueva, confirmed Acapulco's readiness to welcome visitor surges with 16,000 available hotel rooms.
He referenced recent holiday periods generating 11 billion pesos (approximately $587.6 million USD) in economic impact as proof of Acapulco's capacity to host large-scale international events.
Symbol of Acapulco's Revival
For Acapulco, the 2026 FootGolf World Cup transcends sports competition. This event symbolizes the restoration of international reputation, merging sports, tourism, and hospitality on a single global stage.
With thousands of athletes and fans worldwide, Acapulco prepares to rewrite its narrative—transforming from a classic tourist destination into a relevant, sustainable international sport tourism hub.
