The 2026 World Cup is not just the world's largest Football festival, it will also act as a major turning point for the Mexico Tourism industry. This North American nation estimates that three million international tourists will arrive throughout the duration of the tournament.

As one of the co-hosts alongside the United States and Canada, Mexico is positioned at the forefront to welcome the influx of global visitors travelling to experience the World Cup atmosphere in person.

Local authorities are using this tournament as an opportunity to introduce Mexico's Cultural Heritage, culinary traditions, and travel destinations to the whole world.

"Mexico is projected to welcome around 3 million visitors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the majority travelling to Mexico City as this city will host the opening match," stated Mexico City Tourism Minister Alejandra Frausto to Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Mexico City will be the global focus throughout the tournament. The Azteca Stadium, one of the most iconic venues in the history of World Football, is scheduled to host the opening match between the host nation and South Africa.

Alongside attending matches, visiting tourists will have the opportunity to explore numerous historical sites, museums, cultural precincts, and renowned culinary centres.

The Mexican government assesses that this tournament will become one of the single largest drivers of Tourism sector economic growth seen in recent years.

Frausto confirmed that the projected national economic impact will exceed 40 billion pesos, equivalent to approximately 2.3 billion US dollars.

Meanwhile, the specific economic impact for the capital region is forecast to reach over 26 billion pesos, or 1.5 billion US dollars (approximately 26.8 trillion Indonesian Rupiah).

This enormous revenue potential demonstrates how major sporting events can function as a powerful economic engine. Industries set to receive the largest benefits include accommodation, food services, entertainment, retail, transport, and general tourism support services.

The 2026 World Cup is the first ever tournament to be co-hosted by three nations across the North American region: the United States, Mexico and Canada. This new format creates far wider and more diverse opportunities for Football Tourism.

This 2026 edition will also feature the largest ever number of competing teams in World Cup history, expanding to 48 national teams up from the 32 teams that participated in the previous tournament.

With 104 total matches hosted across 16 host cities, Visitor Travel flows are expected to remain dynamic for the entire duration of the tournament. Mexico intends to capitalise on this moment to strengthen its position as one of the world's leading tourist destinations.
