Glodok Chinatown in West Jakarta holds layers of living history passed down through generations. Now, the Historical Area in Tamansari is preparing to be positioned as part of a broader Tourism landscape alongside Jakarta Old Town.
West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah believes the cultural and heritage wealth of Glodok Chinatown makes it worthy of integration with the Old Town under a single tourism umbrella.
This integration is designed to weave Jakarta's historical narrative comprehensively, from the colonial era to the traces of the Chinese community that has long been an integral part of the city.

"Glodok Chinatown tourism will become one entity with the Old Town due to its cultural and heritage aspects, which will be developed by the Jakarta Provincial Government through relevant agencies—the Tourism and Creative Economy Department and Cultural Department," stated Iin on Wednesday, January 22, 2026.
For travelers, Glodok offers more than a brief visit. The area presents intricate details, from trinket shops and distinctive souvenirs to culinary delights that magnetically attract flavor explorers.
"Abundant knick-knacks and souvenirs allow people outside Glodok Chinatown to visit, including those from across Jakarta or beyond. This is an excellent location, rich in heritage, and can serve as an educational hub for cultural literacy," said Iin.
The integration of Glodok Chinatown and the Old Town is projected to positively impact both areas' growth.
By creating a unified tourism corridor, visitors can trace Jakarta's history seamlessly—from colonial architecture to the still-vibrant Chinese cultural center.
According to Iin, integrating Glodok Chinatown with the Old Town under one tourism framework brings beneficial impacts for both locations.
"The conceptual integration framework will be presented by relevant departments. We'll ensure tourism in both Old Town and Glodok Chinatown enhances public comfort and improves tourism offerings," Iin explained.
However, creating this integrated tourism zone faces challenges. Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno identified illegal parking as a primary issue requiring resolution for optimal integration.
Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno stated that illegal parking remains a key challenge to smooth integration efforts.
According to Bang Doel (Rano Karno's nickname), proper area management—including eliminating illegal parking—will unlock Glodok Chinatown's potential as a new tourism magnet, possibly surpassing regional destinations in popularity.
Nevertheless, Rano emphasized that area transformation must occur gradually and measurably. The government's initial focus will center on revitalizing the Old Town as the foundation for sustainable integration.
Daily, approximately 2.5 million people pass through the Old Town area via various modes of Public Transportation, including TransJakarta, MRT, and Electric Railways.
This massive flow presents an opportunity for Glodok Chinatown to expand its role within Jakarta's Tourism Ecosystem.
With improved organization, Glodok is projected to become a strategic accommodation hub for tourists exploring the Old Town.
The presence of hostels and lodgings in Glodok Chinatown aligns with the integration vision, strengthening the area as a gateway to deeper Cultural Experiences and historical immersion in Jakarta.
