Sassuolo defender Jay Idzes acknowledged the quality of Napoli's attacking line, particularly Rasmus Hojlund, despite his own solid performance throughout the match. In the 21st week of the Italian League 2025/2026, Sassuolo left without points after a narrow 0-1 defeat at Napoli's home ground, Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Saturday, January 17, 2026.
Stanislav Lobotka's solitary goal decided the tightly contested match. This defeat extended Sassuolo's negative streak, though Jay Idzes' individual performance remained noteworthy.
Bolstered by the Indonesian National Team Captain at the defensive core, Sassuolo contained Napoli's offensive aggression for long periods. Idzes displayed disciplined tracking of opponents' movements and won crucial duels.

Sassuolo-Class Comeback, Jay Idzes Solid in Defensive Core
A key highlight was Idzes' direct battle with Rasmus Hojlund. Throughout 90 minutes, the 25-year-old defender successfully restricted the Danish striker's movement. Hojlund managed only one shot - a statistic reflecting Idzes' solid marking.
Despite excelling defensively, Idzes acknowledged the quality of Napoli's forwards he faced.
"He's truly strong; we prepared intensively all week to face him," Idzes stated to Tutto Sassuolo.
"Hojlund, but also (Romelu) Lukaku and (Lorenzo) Lucca are top-class strikers."
"They're extremely powerful, though we weren't bad either," added the Dutch-born player.
Idzes expressed disappointment with the result, believing Sassuolo matched the hosts. This third consecutive loss for Neroverdi intensifies pressure on their league position.
"We played excellently and delivered a good performance," Idzes commented post-match.
"We contained Napoli's attacks effectively, proving our defensive readiness, but lacked the crucial element of scoring," the defender noted.
Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojlund's Napoli form shows clear improvement. The 22-year-old previously endured difficulties at Manchester United. Signed for £64 million in 2023, he struggled to meet expectations at Old Trafford.
During two seasons with Manchester United, Hojlund scored just 26 goals in 95 appearances across competitions. This prompted his summer 2025 departure to Napoli on loan to revitalize his career.
The move has proven successful. At Napoli, Hojlund demonstrates increased confidence and efficiency, contributing nine goals in 24 appearances while becoming a key attacking option for the Naples club.
For Jay Idzes, facing a striker of Hojlund's caliber provided valuable experience. His commanding performance reaffirmed his status as Sassuolo's defensive pillar and demonstrated his capacity to compete at the highest level of Italian Football.
