At the end of 2025, a strategic step was taken by the Ministry of Tourism together with the Ministry of Youth and Sports through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Sports Tourism development. This collaboration confirms one important thing: Sports Tourism is no longer just a seasonal trend, but part of Indonesia's larger tourism and economic landscape.

For the Young Generation who love traveling while staying active, sports tourism offers a different experience. Vacation isn't just about aesthetic photos, but also about participating in events, adrenaline, and exciting stories worth bringing home.

So, what exactly is sports tourism and why is Indonesia taking it so seriously?

Sports Tourism, Active Holidays That Became a Lifestyle

According to UN Tourism, sports tourism involves traveling to participate in or watch Sports Events. This sector continues to grow rapidly. In 2023, sports tourism contributed about 10% of global tourism spending and is projected to surge to 17.5% by 2030.

From tourist behavior, Expedia's survey noted 44% of travelers are willing to go abroad to watch or participate in sports events, with average spending reaching US$1,500 per visit. This means sports tourism isn't just about experiences, but also has high economic value.

Indonesia is in a highly advantageous position. Nielsen's 2025 survey shows 86% of Indonesians are now more proactive about maintaining health, far above the global average. This trend makes running, cycling, triathlon, yoga, and wellness festivals increasingly relevant and popular, especially among young people.

Mandalika, Indonesia's Sports Tourism Showcase

When discussing world-class sports tourism, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara almost always becomes the prime example. This Priority Tourism Destination area has leveled up through hosting the Mandalika MotoGP.

The impact goes beyond just attracting spectators. Indonesia Tourism Outlook data shows star-rated hotel occupancy in NTB increased from 33.51% in 2021 to 40.39% in 2024. Non-star hotels also experienced significant spikes.

Economically, the Mandalika Special Economic Zone targets Rp4.43 trillion in investment for 2025. Socially, poverty rates in Central Lombok were reduced from 13.44% in 2020 to 12.07% in 2024. Mandalika proves sports tourism can drive multiple sectors simultaneously.

Pocari Sweat Run Mandalika, Running with a Different Sensation

Still in Mandalika, the Pocari Sweat Run Mandalika 2025 offered an unmatched unique experience. It became the first running event held at the MotoGP circuit, providing the sensation of running on one of the world's best asphalt tracks.

This event attracted thousands of runners with categories from 4.3 km, 10K, half marathon to marathon. About 70% of participants came from outside Lombok, generating economic circulation of Rp85.5 billion. For those wanting to combine running and Beach Holidays, this event deserves a spot in your calendar. The next edition is scheduled for July 11–12, 2026.

Lake Toba, Water Racing with an Iconic Natural Backdrop

Not just Mandalika, Lake Toba has also transformed into a sports tourism magnet. Throughout 2025, two international events were held here: the Aquabike Jetski World Championship and F1 Powerboat Lake Toba.

Dozens of racers from various countries attended, making Lake Toba not only visually stunning but alive as a world sports stage. Interestingly, both events were free and part of Indonesia's Independence Day celebrations, allowing locals and tourists to directly enjoy the atmosphere.

Jakarta International Marathon, Exploring the Capital's Icons

The BTN Jakarta International Marathon or JAKIM offers equally thrilling urban sports tourism. Over 30,000 runners participated in this World Athletics Label Road Race event.

The sensation is unique: starting from the Monas area and finishing inside the GBK Main Stadium. During the event, hotels along the route were packed with participants, while culinary, transportation, and entertainment sectors also flourished. JAKIM proves big cities can be attractive sports tourism destinations too.

Extreme Adventures and Open Nature

Indonesian Sports tourism isn't just about road running. For challenge seekers, the 2025 Paragliding Accuracy World Cup in Lombok delivered adrenaline with participants from eight countries. Meanwhile, trail running remains a favorite choice for those wanting to connect with nature.

Events like Rinjani100, Merbabu Skyrace, Dieng Caldera Race, and MesaStila offer challenging terrain combined with spectacular panoramas, from beaches to mountain peaks. Each event isn't just a competition, but a journey leaving deep impressions.

Sports tourism has now evolved into a complete package: vacation, healthy lifestyle, unique experience, and economic driver. From Mandalika to Lake Toba, from city streets to mountain trails, Indonesia has everything needed to become a premier sports tourism destination. Just one question remains: which event will you chase this year?
