The Badminton World Federation (BWF) officially announced a series of key updates to the Laws and Regulations following its Council meeting on November 8, 2025. The world's highest badminton body confirmed these revisions will impact continental championships, qualification systems, world rankings, and several events in para-badminton.

In its official release, the BWF stated this move represents one of the most comprehensive regulatory updates in recent years. It underscores the BWF's ambition to streamline the calendar, enhance competitive equality, and strengthen the global tournament structure.

Junior and Senior Events Can Be Held Simultaneously

One of the most significant rule changes is detailed in General Competition Regulations 5.1. With this revision, the BWF grants broader authority to Continental Confederations (CCs) to host Junior Championships and senior-level Continental Individual Championships in the same week.

Under the new rule, junior tournaments can now take place alongside senior championships, encompassing individual events, men's team, women's team, and mixed team competitions.

This policy is seen as a way to accelerate the development of young talent while optimizing competition calendar efficiency.

Reserve List for World Championships

Another important change applies to the World Championships. The BWF has added a reserve list mechanism in accordance with Section 5.2.1.

This list is used to fill vacant slots after the draw is published, providing flexibility in case of sudden player withdrawals.

World Ranking Points Update

In the world rankings sector, the BWF updated the points calculation for team tournaments, specifically for pairs with nominal or adjusted rankings (Section 5.3.2.1).

This adjustment ensures point distribution is more proportional to the pair's actual strength.

Major Changes in Para-Badminton

A number of significant revisions were also implemented in para-badminton:

For the Short Stature (SH6) category, the entry size for mixed doubles will increase starting February 15, 2026, or after the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2026 (Section 5.5.6).

The BWF removed the rule for point deductions in international matches ending due to one party's withdrawal.

The BWF added extra points for female players in Level 2 tournaments in mixed-class events when they defeat opponents partnered with a male player.

In men's doubles, the Standing Lower (SL3-SL4) classification was revised to Standing Lower–Standing Upper (SL3-SU5). This regulation also takes effect on February 15, 2026 (Section 5.5.9).

Grand Mission: Equality and Fairness in Competition

In closing, the BWF emphasized that all these updates are designed to "enhance competitive equality, strengthen tournament structures, and support the global development of para-badminton."

With these regulatory changes, 2026 is predicted to be the starting point for a more competitive, inclusive, and modern badminton ecosystem, spanning senior, junior, and para-badminton levels.
