Bogor Regency is preparing an integrated educational geotourism area that invites visitors to trace the story of the earth's journey spanning millions of years. This major step was taken after the Bogor Regency Government received the Geological Information Center (GIC) asset from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

The asset handover was conducted in Bali on November 15, 2025. Bogor Regency Regional Secretary Ajat Rochmat Jatnika called this moment a strategic step to strengthen earth literacy while boosting urban tourism appeal.

“The Geological Agency's selection of Bogor Regency is an appreciation of our geosite potential and the local government's hard work,” stated Ajat.

GIC as the Epicenter of Earth Education

Bogor Regency is one of five selected regions to receive the GIC asset. The area is recognized for its institutional readiness, outstanding geosite potential, and proactive local government.

For Bogor Regency, the GIC is not merely a geological museum but the core of a new city identity – one that converges history, science, conservation, and public recreation within a single urban landscape.

Ajat explained that the Bogor Regent directed the GIC to integrate with three tourism sites: Siliwangi Park, Situ Cikaret, and Bogor Planning Gallery (BPG).

“We want the GIC connected to Siliwangi Park, creating a comprehensive educational tourism zone with historical elements, geological education, and community-friendly public spaces,” said Ajat.

This connectivity enables a holistic geotourism experience. Visitors can explore geological rocks and maps, stroll through city parks, admire Situ Cikaret's calm waters, and study Bogor's development plans at BPG.

Comprehensive Tourism Flow: From Bogor's Past to Future

This integrated area is designed to provide an educational journey sequence. Tourists from students to researchers can experience knowledge progression chronologically.

They'll explore Bogor Regency's history, observe urban planning for the future, then delve deeper into earth's narrative and Mount Salak Geopark conservation.

“We hope children visiting the GIC won't just learn geology but understand Bogor Regency's past and future. All integrated into one educational flow,” Ajat emphasized.

This transcends tourism, becoming an open-space curriculum that can be touched, internalized, and directly experienced.

Learning from Banyuwangi, Advancing Further in Bogor

The Bogor GIC development draws inspiration from Banyuwangi's success, which attracted nearly 16,000 annual visitors by optimizing its GIC as educational tourism.

This model is deemed relevant and potentially enhanced in Bogor, given its strategic position as an urban center with high public accessibility.

“We're confident that a creatively managed, integrated Bogor GIC can draw significant tourist numbers and generate positive economic impacts for communities,” Ajat affirmed.

This optimism stems from geotourism's global growth trend – blending conservation, education, and authentic experiences.

GIC and Mount Salak Geopark: Strengthening Bogor Regency's Identity

Bogor Regency is consolidating its position as a national geotourism destination. The GIC is projected to become vital in strengthening Mount Salak Geopark – an area preserving volcanic history, biodiversity, and foothill community culture.

Supported by the GIC as an education hub, Mount Salak Geopark can offer structured geotourism experiences – bridging geological science and nature exploration.(Antara)
