Something felt different at Spotify Camp Nou that night. Barcelona's pride stadium, currently undergoing renovation, felt more alive – not because of cheering supporters, but because of the sound of Lionel Messi's footsteps returning to tread the ground that was once the stage of his golden era.

Messi's visit to Spain occurred before joining the Argentine national team in Alicante for a friendly match against Angola on Friday, November 14, 2025, as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

"Last night, I returned to a place I deeply missed from the bottom of my heart," Messi wrote on his social media account on Monday.

"A place where I was immensely happy, where you made me feel like the happiest person in the world thousands of times. I hope one day I can return, and not just to say goodbye as a player, because I never got the chance to do that."

The visit was an emotional moment for the Argentine superstar, who never had the opportunity for a proper farewell with the club that made his name.

Messi left Barcelona in 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) due to the financial crisis engulfing the club.

At that time, the Covid-19 pandemic restricted everything, even for the farewell of a legend. He left without applause at Camp Nou, without tears from the stands that once chanted his name.

Messi Visits Old Home, Laporta Speaks Out

Messi's quiet arrival sparked wild rumors: would he return to strengthen Barcelona, even just for a short time?

However, Barcelona President Joan Laporta quickly dismissed the speculation.

"With all due respect to Messi, the players, and the entire team, now is not the time to speculate about uncertain scenarios," he said to Radio Catalunya on Wednesday.

Laporta admitted he was surprised, but also happy to see Messi back at his old home.

"I am happy to see Messi return to Camp Nou, but we didn't know he was coming. We love him. This is his home and he knows it. I still think he deserves the best farewell in history at this club," he said.

The rumors arose because the Major League Soccer (MLS) season will have a long break before the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Messi was suggested to potentially use his time to join a European club temporarily, similar to what David Beckham (AC Milan) or Thierry Henry (Arsenal) once did.

Messi's night-time visit to Camp Nou went viral. Photos of Messi at Camp Nou then became fodder for jokes from other European clubs.

Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg uploaded an edited photo of Messi arriving at their stadium with the caption: "Welcome Back Messi!"

Czech club Slavia Praha chimed in with a more dramatic tone: "Good to see you, old friend."

The jokes went viral on social media, but behind the laughter of the clubs' admins, there was a shared warm feeling – the football world misses Messi at Camp Nou.

During 17 years defending Blaugrana, Messi set records that may remain untouched for a long time: 672 goals in 778 matches and 34 trophies, including 10 LaLiga titles and 4 Champions League titles.

This record makes him Barcelona's all-time top scorer and appearance holder.

Now, at 38 years old and wearing an Inter Miami jersey, Messi returned to Camp Nou not as a player, but as a man coming to ease his longing.

The story of Messi and Barcelona truly feels like an unfinished relationship. He may have changed jerseys, moved continents, and written a new chapter in America, but his heart remains in Catalonia. //
