Why is it Better to Avoid Room Numbers Ending in 01 When Staying in a Hotel?

When it comes to hotel stay experiences, comfort is everything. From soft mattresses, fresh room scents, to a quiet atmosphere are important parts of a perfect Holiday. However, there is one type of room that should be avoided, no matter How good the hotel is.

According to a Travel expert, the answer lies in rooms with numbers ending in 01, such as 101, 201, 301, and so on.

Not About Superstition But Logic 

This unique advice comes from Javier Sobrino, founder of Descubriendo Viajes, a travel platform from Spain that focuses on selected accommodations. 

In an interview quoted by Mirror, Sobrino said that choosing a hotel room is not just about the view or size, but also its location.

“Choosing a hotel room may seem trivial, but the room numbering factor can play an important role beyond myths or superstitions,” he said.

According to Sobrino, some numbers do have unique connotations in various cultures. In the United States, the number 13 is often avoided because it is considered unlucky. 

Meanwhile, the number 237 became iconic after appearing in Stanley Kubrick's legendary horror film The Shining, and room 622 is known through the mystery novel by Joel Dicker.

However, Sobrino said, unlike numbers related to legends or fictional stories, numbers ending in 01 should be avoided for rational reasons.

Disturbance from Elevators and Stairs

In an interview on Cadena COPE radio, Sobrino revealed the reason behind his advice. It turns out that rooms with numbers ending in 01 are usually located at the end of the corridor, near the elevator and emergency staircase door.

“Those rooms are usually located in the corner, that is, near the elevator and also near the hotel staircase exit,” he explained.

This location might seem strategic for guests coming in and out, but it's not ideal for those seeking tranquility. 

The sound of footsteps, doors opening and closing, to the ding of the elevator can be minor disturbances that over time make sleep difficult.

“Every time a guest passes by or someone goes down the stairs, you will hear it. I've even heard that when staying in a room in this corner, you can hear the elevator,” Sobrino revealed.

Tranquility is the Key to a Perfect Vacation

If you plan to stay at a hotel to rest completely, whether after a long trip or just for some me-time on the Weekend, make sure not to choose room number 01.

When checking in, pay attention to the room number given by the receptionist. If you happen to get room 101 or 201, it doesn't hurt to politely ask if there is another room a bit further from the elevator.
