The Indonesia national football team has been eliminated early from the 2026 AFF Cup after failing to secure a top two position in Group A. A 1-1 draw against Singapore officially confirmed the Garuda squad will not advance to the semi-final round.

This final Group A match was held at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday. Indonesia only collected one point as both teams performed on equal footing throughout the fixture.

This result meant Indonesia could not overtake Vietnam and Singapore from the top two standings. Vietnam finished the group with 10 points, while Singapore locked in 8 points to confirm their semi-final qualification.

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has confirmed that a full comprehensive evaluation will be conducted regarding the national team's campaign at this year's tournament.

"We will carry out an evaluation for the results at the 2026 ASEAN Championship, so that the Indonesia national team will be better prepared to face a number of important upcoming tournaments," Erick wrote in his latest official Instagram post on Friday, 8 August 2026.

Indonesia Failed To Maintain Lead After Going Ahead First

Indonesia actually started the second half with positive momentum. Ragnar Oratmangoen put Garuda ahead in the 47th minute with a goal that placed Indonesia in an advantageous position.

However, this lead only lasted for 19 minutes. Singapore scored an equaliser in the 66th minute, bringing the score to 1-1.

The build-up to Singapore's goal also becomes one of the key points Indonesia must evaluate. The Garuda defensive line showed poor coordination when anticipating the play, particularly between Rizky Ridho and Cahya Supriadi.

Following this match, the Indonesia national team still has several critical scheduled commitments. The Garuda squad is set to compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup and participate in FIFA Match Day fixtures for the rest of this year.

The next major campaign is the 2027 Asian Cup. This tournament will be hosted in Saudi Arabia starting January next year, and stands as one of the highest priority events Indonesia must prepare for properly.

"Thank you to all players, coaches and backroom staff of the Indonesia national team who have fought hard at the 2026 ASEAN Championship," Erick stated.

Indonesia Fails To Reach Semi-Finals For Second Consecutive Time

The elimination from the 2026 AFF Cup marks a disappointing record for the Indonesia national team. This is the second straight edition where Indonesia failed to qualify for the semi-final stage.

The same outcome occurred two years prior when the team was still under the leadership of Shin Tae-yong. Back then, the Garuda squad that heavily relied on young players only finished third in the group with just 4 points.

Indonesia last qualified for the AFF Cup semi-finals during the 2020 edition. On that occasion, the team even progressed all the way to the final, before finishing as runners-up after losing to Thailand with an aggregate score of 2-6.

Overall, the runner-up position remains Indonesia's highest achievement in the entire history of the AFF Cup. The Garuda team has finished the tournament in second place on six occasions, namely the 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2016 and 2020 editions.

At this stage, carrying out a proper evaluation has become a critical task for PSSI and the coaching team. Especially as the Indonesia national team still faces a number of major upcoming campaigns that will require far more mature preparation, following the disappointing result at the 2026 AFF Cup.
