Travel trends continue to evolve. Today, travelers no longer only visit popular tourist destinations, but also seek meaningful experiences, peace of mind, and healthy lifestyles. The Ministry of Tourism has designated wellness tourism as one of the primary priorities for developing high-quality tourism in Indonesia.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana emphasized that developing wellness tourism is expected to boost Indonesia's competitiveness as a world-class tourist destination, while also fulfilling the needs of modern travelers.

“We have formally established wellness tourism as one of our focus areas for developing high-quality tourism,” stated Widiyanti in Jakarta.

As a concrete implementation step, the Ministry of Tourism held the full-month "Wonderful Indonesia Wellness" program running from 1 to 30 November 2025. This initiative combined two flagship wellness events: the Royal Surakarta Wellness Festival and the Jogja Cultural Wellness Festival.

The Royal Surakarta Wellness Festival was hosted by the Surakarta Royal Palace, while the Jogja Cultural Wellness Festival was organized by the Yogyakarta Regional Tourism Promotion Board.

The Royal Surakarta Wellness Festival presented diverse activities that highlighted traditional Javanese cultural wisdom, including Javanese Wisdom Immersion, Gending for Therapy, Royal Dance Symphony, A Holy Journey, and Javanese Secret Recipe.

Meanwhile, the Jogja Cultural Wellness Festival delivered wellness experiences through dedicated sessions for Healthy Food and Herbals, Eco-Friendly Living, Spiritual Wellness and Energy Healing, Natural Beauty, Family and Inner Child, as well as Harmony in Wellness.

Widiyanti confirmed that the government will continue to launch various initiatives that integrate sports, tourism, and healthy living patterns.

“The Ministry of Tourism will continuously support the execution of events that combine sports, tourism, and healthy lifestyles,” she added.

Travel For Meaningful Experiences

According to Widiyanti, global tourism trends have shifted fundamentally. Travelers no longer merely visit famous destinations, but instead pursue experiences that deliver emotional value and help them disconnect from daily routine burnout.

“We have entered an era where experiences hold more value than material possessions. Human connection matters more than superficial convenience, and time spent away from the digital world has become a luxury,” she explained.

She noted that the rapid advancement of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), has ironically created stronger public demand for authentic, tangible real-world experiences.

“Extreme AI is creating extreme analog. This trend is clearly visible in the booming experience economy, including the fitness and wellness sector which ranks among the fastest growing industries globally,” Widiyanti stated.

Indonesia's Vast Wellness Tourism Potential

Global industry data further supports the positive outlook for wellness tourism. Per Global Wellness Institute figures, the global wellness economy reached USD 6.8 trillion in 2024, and is projected to grow to USD 9.75 trillion by 2029.

Meanwhile, UN Tourism recorded that sports tourism contributed approximately 10% of total global tourism expenditure in 2023, with a forecasted 17.5% growth rate for the 2023–2030 period.

Indonesia holds very strong opportunities in this sector. 2024 Global Wellness Institute data confirms Indonesia has the largest wellness economy in Southeast Asia, with a total market value of USD 55.77 billion.

Beyond that, the 2025 Nielsen survey found that 86 percent of the Indonesian population now takes proactive measures to maintain their health, a rate that exceeds the global average.

Findings from the 2025 and 2026 Indonesia Tourism Outlook also show that travelers, particularly Millennials and Generation Z, are increasingly motivated to travel for new experiences, event attendance, as well as sports and wellness activities.

Given this potential, Widiyanti expressed confidence that Indonesia can establish itself as a leading sports and wellness tourism destination in the Southeast Asian region.

“We are confident that wellness tourism development will succeed through tight collaboration between government, private business, local communities, and all related stakeholders,” she concluded.
