Under Jakarta's sky that never truly sleeps, Kota Tua still stands proud even as the paint on its walls begins to fade. The revitalization of the Historic Area is set to be driven forward once more, not merely to beautify its appearance but to revive its soul.
Deputy Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), Veronica Tan, holds a vision for Kota Tua's future. She envisions Fatahillah Square not just as a tourist spot, but as a vibrant and Inclusive Public Space.
“I envision Fatahillah Square not only thronged with tourists, but also filled with storytellers, musicians, and the laughter of children. It will become the spirit of a living city, a place where Jakarta's diversity, creativity, and resilience grow together,” said Veronica Tan.

This revitalization is the result of collaboration between the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, Jakarta MRT, and various other stakeholders.
A joint effort focused not only on physical development but also on restoring the human meaning long inherent to this area.
“Restoring the soul of Kota Tua isn't just about repainting walls or fixing roofs, but about how we reconnect history with humanity, awaken meaning, and make this place breathe again,” she continued.
For Veronica, Jakarta's Kota Tua is not merely a place with old buildings and colonial tales.
More than that, this area is a living space capable of nurturing the creativity and happiness of its citizens.
She hopes Kota Tua can become a welcoming space for all, from street artists to children Running beneath the afternoon light.
“I hope that in the future, the Kota Tua Area can function not only as a mobility hub or a Tourist Destination, but also as a vessel for growing creativity and happiness – a living space friendly to the public, artists, and children,” she expressed.
Memories of the past also remain strong in Veronica's mind. About a decade ago, she was involved in the Kota Tua Project alongside cultural communities, community leaders, and artists who held deep concern for preserving this area.
Now, she aims to rekindle that spirit in a more collaborative and sustainable way.
“For nearly five centuries, this area has held a long history that is part of our nation's identity. Our task is to pass on its spirit to our children, so they grow up proud of their history and culture,” she stated.
With a vision blending history, humanity, and the future, the Revitalization of Jakarta's Kota Tua is not just about repairing old buildings. It is about reviving the pulse of life, making it a place where past and future embrace each other in new harmony. Antara
