Germany National Team suffered a 1-2 defeat against Ecuador in the final fixture of 2026 FIFA World Cup Group E at the New York New Jersey Stadium, United States, early Friday WIB. Despite failing to collect points from this match, Der Panzer still secured progression to the Round of 32 as group winners, courtesy of their superior goal difference.

Germany shocked their opponents within the opening two minutes of the match. Leroy Sané found the back of Ecuador Goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez's net with a finish from an assist supplied by Florian Wirtz.

This lead was short lived. Just seven minutes later, Ecuador equalised through a powerful long-range strike from Nilson Angulo outside the penalty area that Manuel Neuer failed to anticipate. The scoreline stood at 1-1.

Germany pushed immediately to regain control of the game. Felix Nmecha tested the opposition with a long range effort in the 14th minute, followed by a headed attempt from Kai Havertz in the 25th minute, but the 1-1 deadlock remained unbroken going into the half-time interval.

After the restart, Havertz went down inside the penalty box. However, following a VAR review of the incident, the match official ruled that no penalty would be awarded.

Ecuador proceeded to increase the intensity of their attacking play against Germany's defence. Manuel Neuer pulled off a critical save, tipping away Enner Valencia's stinging half-volley attempt.

Ecuador turned the fixture around to take a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute. From an attacking corner kick, Kevin Rodríguez headed the ball across the face of goal where Gonzalo Plata reacted quicker than Neuer to slot home the winning strike.

Trailing by one goal, Germany ramped up offensive pressure for the remaining minutes, but the scoreline held firm until the final whistle. This 2-1 result confirmed Ecuador finished the group stage in 3rd place with 4 points, earning qualification to the Round of 32 as one of the highest ranked third-placed teams across all groups.
