Indonesian Football has been officially confirmed to not take part in the 2026 Asian Games hosted in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. This confirmation was announced by Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir, after updated regulations restricted men's football participants solely to teams that qualified for the final tournament of the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup.

This decision comes as a heavy blow for the Indonesia U-23 squad, who have been consistent participants at Asia's largest multi-sport event. For this edition, the Garuda Muda squad will only be able to watch the tournament from the sidelines after failing to secure a spot in the U-23 Asian Cup final round.

"No, Indonesian football will not compete at the 2026 Asian Games. This ruling has already been formalised by the Asian Games organisers and AFC," Erick Thohir stated in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The 2026 Asian Games will be held 19 September to 4 October in Japan, with competitions across multiple sporting disciplines including football. Unlike all previous editions, the men's football tournament will only admit 16 participating nations.

This policy was agreed between the 2026 Asian Games Organising Committee (AINAGOC), Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Only nations that reached the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup final tournament are eligible to enter the men's football event.

This rule automatically closes Indonesia's path, as the Indonesia National Team U-23 failed to advance from the 2026 U-23 Asian Cup qualification stage. As a result, Garuda Muda does not meet the eligibility requirements to compete at this year's Asian Games.

The Youth and Sports Minister confirmed that Indonesia respects and will comply fully with the decision set by the event organisers and AFC.

"So the Indonesian National Team will not join the 2026 Asian Games. This is due to the official rules," he added.

Before this final regulation was enforced, Indonesia had made formal efforts to campaign for the national football squad's participation.

Indonesian Olympic Committee President Raja Sapta Oktohari submitted an official objection, noting this qualification system deviated from all previous editions and was detrimental to multiple countries including Indonesia.

However, the complaint did not alter the organisers' ruling. AINAGOC retained the regulation making 2026 U-23 Asian Cup qualification results the sole entry pathway for the Asian Games men's football tournament.

Historically, the Indonesian national football team has competed at the Asian Games football event 11 times. The Garuda Squad recorded their best ever finish at the 1958 edition, where they secured third place.
