England National Team Head Coach Thomas Tuchel secured a convincing victory in his debut match at the 2026 World Cup. Yet behind England's 4-2 triumph over Croatia at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas on early Thursday WIB, Tuchel issued criticism over the photographer arrangement around the pitch.
The German tactician admitted he was left disappointed, as he was unable to properly experience one of the most special moments of his career with The Three Lions: the playing of the English national anthem before kickoff.
This match against Croatia marked Tuchel's first time leading England at the world's biggest Football tournament. However, he stated this historic moment was disrupted by photographers positioned extremely close to the substitute bench area.

Tuchel could not see any of his players during the national anthem, as a crowd of photographers stood directly in front of the bench. This was one of the moments he had most anticipated ever since being appointed as England's head coach.
"I have to say this: I am asking FIFA to please adjust photographer positioning during national anthems, because I could not see my team at all while the anthem played," Tuchel stated as quoted by ESPN.
"I waited for this moment. This was an incredibly special moment for me today, and I was standing half a metre away from 50 photographers right in front of me. I could not see a single player," he continued.
This complaint received an immediate response from FIFA. The global football governing body promptly conducted an evaluation and implemented more flexible policies for upcoming matches.
As reported by BBC and multiple European media outlets, FIFA reached a middle ground by adjusting photographer placement during national anthem sessions. Photographers will be organised into small groups, and may be repositioned closer towards the pitch halfway line.
Additionally, coaching staff were also granted greater flexibility. They are no longer required to stand directly in front of the substitute bench, and may move to the left or right side of the photographer area to get a clear view of their players.
This new policy was first implemented during the Group A fixture between Czech Republic and South Africa in Atlanta on Thursday evening WIB.
FIFA's fast response shows that even small details outside of match play are receiving attention throughout the 2026 World Cup. This is especially true as national anthem moments are widely regarded as an emotional experience for both players and coaches.
Tuchel's issue was also noted to be linked to the unique characteristics of AT&T Stadium, which uses a different layout compared to dedicated football stadiums. This venue is originally the home ground of NFL team Dallas Cowboys, resulting in inherent limitations for the media area and substitute bench arrangement.
Despite the temporary disruption, Tuchel was still able to smile after England opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a win over Croatia.
