Mariano Peralta's debut for Persib Bandung in the 2026 President's Cup semi-finals stands as one of the most highly anticipated moments this season. However, one detail has left football fans across the country puzzled: why did this Argentine player ultimately choose Persib, when he was already very close to finalising a move to Persija Jakarta?

Peralta is yet to feature in an official match for Maung Bandung since his signing at the end of July. Persib head coach Igor Tolic has been granting the 28-year old additional time to fully restore his physical condition following the long international travel from South America.

With the semi-final fixture against Persija Jakarta scheduled for 4 August 2026, the window for Peralta to make his competitive debut is now wide open.

This upcoming debut carries a particularly notable backstory. Prior to signing with Persib, multiple reliable reports had placed Peralta on the brink of joining Persija, with sources even confirming he was lined up to be part of Shin Tae-yong's planned squad rebuild.

His career trajectory shifted dramatically when Peralta opted to accept Persib's offer instead, citing clearer pathways to advance his professional career at international level as the deciding factor.

This season, Persib have qualified for both the 2026/2027 ACL Two and 2026/2027 ASEAN Club Championship, while Persija will not be competing in any continental club competitions this campaign.

Alongside continental football opportunities, Peralta also noted he was attracted to Persib's standing as one of Indonesia's most historic major clubs, with an unmatched, dedicated nationwide supporter base.

This official confirmation has now ended weeks of unconfirmed speculation and conflicting reports that had surrounded his transfer negotiations.

Persib management have also clarified that Peralta was recruited specifically to address the team's tactical and squad depth requirements ahead of this season's congested fixture calendar.

Excitement around his arrival is also fuelled by his proven form in the league: during his last campaign with Borneo FC, the Argentine forward recorded an impressive return of 20 goals and 14 assists.

All attention now turns to the upcoming semi-final. Should he be named in the matchday squad, Peralta will make his Persib debut directly against the very club that once looked set to be his next destination before he committed to wearing Persib's blue jersey.
