Zverev Targets the ATP Throne, Confident He Can Still Overtake Jannik Sinner by the End of the 2026 Season

Alexander Zverev has confirmed his ambition to take the world number one men's tennis ranking from Jannik Sinner remains open all the way through the end of the 2026 season. Despite sitting behind Sinner in the ATP standings, the German player maintains the race is far from concluded, with multiple major tournaments still scheduled on the calendar.

Ahead of competing at the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal event, Zverev revealed that claiming the top world ranking has become one of his core priorities, after securing his first career Grand Slam title at this year's Roland Garros.

"That is absolutely my goal," Zverev stated, in comments published by ATP on Monday, 3 August 2026.

Despite setting this high target, the 29-year-old stressed he is choosing to focus on improving his on-court performance, rather than only chasing positions in the ATP rankings table.

"The main objective is to play tennis as well as I possibly can. If I can keep developing my game, then results, titles and ranking positions will follow naturally," Zverev added.

Jannik Sinner currently holds a comfortable lead at the summit of the ATP Rankings with 13,450 points. Zverev occupies second place with 8,480 points.

However, when viewing the ATP Live Race to Turin standings which only count points accumulated during the current season, the gap between the pair sits at just 1,410 points. With roughly three and a half months of competition remaining on the 2026 ATP Tour calendar, there remains major scope for ranking positions to shift.

Montreal is Zverev's first tournament since he finished runner-up to Sinner in the Wimbledon final. That defeat extended Sinner's unbroken winning run against Zverev throughout the 2026 season.

Sinner has now won all five of their head-to-head encounters so far this year, and holds an active 10-match winning streak across the full career rivalry between the two players.

Despite not yet getting the better of Sinner in their recent matches, Zverev argued this ongoing rivalry proves the pair are the most consistent performers on tour this season.

"We have played each other more than probably any other players on the circuit right now. Of course it is not a positive that I keep losing to him, but it also shows we are very likely the two most consistent players this season," Zverev said.

Across the 2026 season to date, Zverev has recorded 44 wins against just 11 defeats. This impressive run of form carried him to the Roland Garros title, and confirmed his status as Sinner's primary challenger for the ATP world number one ranking.

As the 2017 champion of the National Bank Open, also known as the Canadian Open, Zverev will begin his Montreal campaign against the winner of the opening round match between Italy's Lorenzo Sonego and Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands.
