Austria opened their 2026 World Cup campaign on a positive note, defeating Jordan 3-1 in their opening Group J fixture at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Wednesday afternoon WIB. With this result, Das Team occupies the upper group Standings alongside Argentina.

Jordan, making their historic debut at the World Cup, put up resilient resistance and even troubled Austria early on. Jordan registered their first threat via a rapid counter-attack in the 2nd minute, though Ehsan Haddad's tight-angle strike failed to find the target.

Austria gradually assumed control of the match and broke the deadlock in the 21st minute. Jordanian Goalkeeper Yazid Abulaila was unable to reach Romano Schmid's spectacular long-range effort from outside the penalty box.

Jordan attempted to respond with Abualnadi's header which only struck the goal frame. In the 36th minute, Ali Olwan's shot was parried by Austrian keeper Alexander Schlager. Mousa Al Taamari latched onto the rebound but his attempt was successfully blocked by Austria's defensive line. Austria held a 1-0 lead heading into the half-time interval.

Just four minutes after the restart, Jordan found an equaliser. Ali Olwan unleashed a powerful drive from outside the penalty area which bounced off the post before crossing the line into Austria's net, levelling the score at 1-1.

Austria had a 67th minute goal by Marko Arnautovic disallowed by VAR, after Stefan Posch was detected committing a handball in the build-up.

Austria's sustained pressure finally paid off in the 77th minute. From a corner kick, Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab scored an own goal to restore Austria's lead at 2-1.

Jordan pushed to erase the deficit for the remainder of normal time, but were consistently contained by Austria's defensive line.

In the 12th minute of second-half stoppage time, Jordan conceded a penalty after substitute Salim Obaid handled the ball while attempting to clear Arnautovic's cross.

Arnautovic stepped up as the penalty taker and converted perfectly, placing his strike into the right side of the goal to seal Austria's 3-1 victory.
