As defending champions, Argentina are the top favourites in 2026 World Cup Group J. However, La Albiceleste's path to the knockout stage is predicted to be far from straightforward, as Algeria, Austria and Jordan all carry clear ambitions to pull off a major upset.

Argentina head into the North American tournament riding high on confidence, having finished as the strongest performing side in the CONMEBOL qualification zone. Led by head coach Lionel Scaloni, the team topped the standings with 38 points from 18 matches, recording 12 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats.

This impressive form carried over into their pre-tournament preparation period. Julian Alvarez and his teammates secured two convincing warm-up victories, beating Honduras 2-0 and Iceland 3-0.

Aside from their status as reigning world champions, Argentina also hold fond memories of competing on North American soil. At the 1986 World Cup hosted in Mexico, Diego Armando Maradona famously led his country to lift the world title.

Lionel Scaloni has once again built his squad around the proven core group that has delivered success for Argentina over recent years. Emiliano Martinez starts between the posts, while the defensive line is anchored by Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Nicolas Otamendi and Nicolas Tagliafico.

In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernandez operate as the creative and defensive engine of the team. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi remains trusted to lead the forward line alongside Lautaro Martinez and Thiago Almada.

Despite being the overwhelming group favourites, Argentina cannot afford to underestimate the threat posed by Algeria. Vladimir Petkovic's side have shown significant and consistent improvement over the past few months.

Algeria first turned international heads after securing a shock 1-0 away win over the Netherlands in Rotterdam. They followed this result with a dominant 4-0 thrashing of Bolivia, before holding Uruguay to a goalless draw.

This run of form is a continuation of their strong campaign during African zone qualification. Algeria finished top of Group G with 25 points from 10 matches, registering 8 wins, 1 draw and just one single defeat.

Riyad Mahrez remains the central creative figure for Algeria. Alongside Fares Chaibi, Ibrahim Maza and Amine Gouiri, they form a sharp, dangerous attacking unit.

A further threat comes from Austria, who return to the World Cup stage after a long 28 year absence. Das Team booked their ticket to North America after finishing first in Group H of the European Qualification zone.

Austria finished ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Cyprus and San Marino to end their long wait for a World Cup finals appearance, having last qualified for the 1998 tournament in France.

Despite boasting a deep footballing heritage, Austria head into the 2026 tournament with a clear mission to improve their poor modern World Cup record: on their last five appearances, the side have never progressed past the group stage.

This is a nation that once enjoyed golden eras of international football, finishing 4th at the 1934 World Cup and claiming 3rd place in the 1954 edition. The 2026 World Cup presents Austria with a long-awaited chance to once again prove their quality at the highest global level.

Meanwhile, tournament debutants Jordan have the potential to become this group's dark horse. The Middle Eastern nation will make their historic first appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals.

Qualifying for the tournament hosted in the United States marks the single greatest achievement in the history of Jordanian football. They delivered an outstanding campaign throughout qualification, topping Group G in the second round before finishing as runners-up of Group B in the final qualification round behind South Korea.

On their road to the finals, Jordan finished ahead of Iraq, Oman, Palestine and Kuwait. This achievement is made all the more remarkable as they eliminated multiple nations with previous World Cup tournament experience.

Jordan's confidence has also received a major boost after finishing as runners-up at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. During that tournament, they knocked out both Iraq and South Korea before ultimately falling to Qatar in the final match.
