Spain National Team failed to capitalize on their pre-match favourite status as they kicked off their campaign in 2026 World Cup Group H. Facing tournament debutants Cape Verde, La Furia Roja were forced to settle for a 0-0 Draw after repeatedly failing to break through the opposition defence.
This result at Atlanta Stadium on Monday evening became one of the biggest shocks of the tournament's opening phase. As reigning European champions and strong favourites to win the group, Spain instead dropped two critical points.
Meanwhile Cape Verde celebrated this valuable single point, which keeps their qualification chances alive for the Round of 32.

Right from the first whistle, Luis de la Fuente's squad immediately took full control of the match. With nearly 80% ball possession, Spain laid constant siege to Cape Verde's compact defensive line.
Pedri's cross in the 13th minute was cleared by Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes just before it could reach any attacking player inside the penalty box.
Spain's dominance continued. In the 30th minute, a volley struck from inside the penalty area by Marc Cucurella flew just over the crossbar.
Despite operating mostly on the defensive, Cape Verde created a threat in the 37th minute. Capitalising on an error from Rodri, Dailon Livramento unleashed a long range shot that drifted wide of the target.
Spain created another opening in the 41st minute. This time Ferran Torres' close range strike hit the crossbar. Mikel Oyarzabal headed the rebound ball, only for the effort to be denied by veteran Goalkeeper Vozinha.
The 42-year old Goalkeeper once again demonstrated his quality, stopping further goal attempts from Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte. The score remained 0-0 at half time.
Entering the second half, Spain continued to probe for gaps to unlock the opposition defence, while Cape Verde maintained their highly disciplined defensive structure.
Fabian Ruiz went close with a headed attempt in the 58th minute, but failed to change the scoreline.
Luis de la Fuente brought on wonderkid Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The introduction of the young Barcelona player injected fresh energy into Spain's attacking line.
Yamal created multiple chances and opened up attacking space, but the long-awaited goal still never arrived.
Spain's best chance came in the 89th minute. Dani Olmo played a pass to Mikel Oyarzabal who was positioned perfectly for a shot. However Oyarzabal's effort was blocked by Pico Lopes directly on the goal line.
When the final whistle blew, Spain's total match dominance had failed to produce a single goal. Cape Verde had successfully claimed this hugely valuable point.
