2026 FIFA World Cup Group D brings together four nations from four separate confederations. Alongside host nation the United States representing CONCACAF, the group also features Paraguay (CONMEBOL), Australia (AFC) and Turkey (UEFA).

This unique lineup makes Group D one of the most open groups in the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. All four teams bring distinct backgrounds, playing styles and tournament ambitions.

United States

As one of three co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, the United States enters this group as the clear top favourite. Playing on home soil in front of their own supporters is a massive advantage for the squad nicknamed The Yanks.

However, host nation status also brings significant pressure, with high expectations placed on the team by their fanbase.

The 2026 World Cup will mark the United States' 12th appearance in the tournament finals. Their best ever finish came in the very first edition in 1930, when they secured third place.

In the modern era, their top performance was reaching the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and Japan.

Now, under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, the side is built around a Golden Generation of players plying their trade across top European leagues. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson and Folarin Balogun are the core talents trusted to carry the team deep into the tournament.

Paraguay

Paraguay return to the World Cup stage after missing every edition since 2010. Gustavo Alfaro's side successfully navigated the gruelling South American qualification zone to book their spot.

This will be Paraguay's 9th World Cup finals appearance. Their best tournament run came at the 2010 edition in South Africa, where they reached the quarter finals. That result remains the highest achievement in Paraguayan international football history to this day.

Paraguay will look to the creativity of Miguel Almirón, young prospect Julio Enciso and the leadership of solid defender Gustavo Gómez. This blend of veteran experience and youthful energy makes them a genuine threat to every opponent in the group.

Australia

Australia qualified as runners-up of Group C in the third round of AFC qualifiers, extending their unbroken run of World Cup appearances dating back to 2006.

2026 will be the Socceroos' 7th finals appearance. Their best results came when they reached the Round of 16 at the 2006 tournament, a feat they repeated at Qatar 2022.

Led by head coach Tony Popovic, Australia are renowned as a disciplined, hard-to-beat unit. The experience of goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, the physical presence of defender Harry Souttar and Jackson Irvine's leadership in midfield form the foundation of the Socceroos' game plan.

Turkey

Turkey are back at the World Cup after a 24 year absence. The nation secured their ticket to North America via the UEFA playoff route, carrying huge optimism that they can replicate past glories.

This will be Turkey's third ever World Cup finals appearance, following previous participations in 1954 and 2002. At the 2002 tournament they wrote national football history by finishing third, the peak of Turkey's golden generation era.

Now, the squad coached by Vincenzo Montella boasts an exciting new generation of young talent. All eyes are on Real Madrid's Arda Güler, supported by captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu, young forward Kenan Yıldız, experienced defender Merih Demiral and rising star Can Uzun.

With all four sides possessing relatively balanced quality, Group D is widely predicted to be one of the most competitive groups at the 2026 World Cup.

While the United States are rightfully favoured on home soil, Paraguay, Australia and Turkey all have the capability to pull off upset results.
