Lionel Messi could not hide his disappointment after the Argentina National Team failed to defend their World Cup title. The captain admitted that defeat against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final left deep heartache, even as he remained proud of La Albiceleste's fight throughout the entire tournament.

Argentina had to bury their dream of making history as back-to-back world champions after falling 0-1 to Spain in the final fixture at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. Ferran Torres' goal in the second period of extra time sealed the World Cup trophy for La Roja.

Messi Admits Defeat Was Devastating

One day after the final, Messi shared an emotional public message via his official Instagram account.

The 39-year-old captain stated he would need time to process the bitter result Argentina faced following their long campaign across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

"The pain runs very deep. It will take time for this wound to heal," wrote Lionel Messi, quoted from his official Instagram post on Tuesday.

This statement reflected just how high Argentina's hopes had been to retain the title they claimed in the previous tournament edition.

Still Proud Of La Albiceleste's Efforts

Despite his disappointment at failing to lift the trophy, Messi emphasised that Argentina's run at the 2026 World Cup remained an experience he will always cherish.

According to Messi, the squad managed by Lionel Scaloni had shown extraordinary dedication to reach the World Cup final for two consecutive editions.

Messi also thanked the full support from the Argentine public, who had continuously lifted the team's spirit throughout the entire tournament.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every word and every message. Once again we stood united as one nation, held our heads high and shared this immense pride of being Argentine," wrote Messi.

Remained Sporting, Congratulated Spain

Even amidst his disappointment, Messi maintained full sportsmanship.

At the end of his message, the decorated all-time great also extended formal congratulations to Spain on their world championship victory.

This win secured the second World Cup title in Spain's history, as Ferran Torres' extra time winner ended Argentina's bid to retain their status as defending world champions.

Argentina's Campaign Remains Deserving Of Recognition

Despite failing to defend the trophy, Argentina delivered an impressive run throughout the 2026 World Cup.

La Albiceleste advanced to the final after dramatically eliminating England in the semi-final round.

Messi also stood as one of the most influential players of the entire tournament, recording eight goals plus multiple assists that carried Argentina all the way to the final match.

On this occasion however, Spain were the more clinical side in the final, bringing an end to Argentina's recent dominance and closing out the campaign for Messi and his teammates as runners-up.
