Weekends are the time many people set aside for travel. Operating the Pasar Senen to Solo Balapan route, the Mataram Train does not simply deliver passengers to their final stop — it begins crafting a Travel Experience the very moment it pulls out of Jakarta.
The Mataram Train travels through a chain of cities celebrated for their Cultural Heritage, historical sites, local cuisine and leading tourist attractions. This journey gives passengers the chance to witness the diverse character of Java along one single, long yet thoroughly enjoyable travel route.
Departing Jakarta, the train first heads to Cirebon, a coastal city that preserves the living cultural legacy of the Cirebon Sultanates. This city hosts well-known popular destinations including Kasepuhan Palace, Kanoman Palace, and the Trusmi Batik District — Cirebon's renowned traditional batik trading hub. The signature coastal cuisine of northern Java also stands as one of the city's biggest visitor draws.

The journey then enters the Banyumas region, with Purwokerto as a key stopping point. This town is known as the gateway to the Baturraden tourism area on the slopes of Mount Slamet. Its cool mountain air and sweeping natural scenery have earned this area status as one of Favourite Destinations in Central Java.
The train continues onwards through Kroya, Kebumen and Kutoarjo. Along this entire stretch of track, passengers are treated to restful, scenic views. Travellers will pass the Kebumen Geopark, Menganti Beach and its open ocean panoramas, right through to the Menoreh Hills that form the border between Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
Upon entering Yogyakarta, the journey takes on an even more lively atmosphere. Nicknamed the City of Gudeg, this is one of Indonesia's most visited tourist locations. Landmarks including Malioboro Street, Yogyakarta Royal Palace, Taman Sari Water Castle and Prambanan Temple constantly welcome crowds of both Domestic Travellers and international visitors.
From Yogyakarta, the route continues to Klaten, which is famous for its natural cold spring pools known locally as umbul. Umbul Ponggok and Umbul Manten are top picks for visitors wishing to experience the crystal clear natural spring waters.
The final destination on this service is Solo Balapan Station, the main gateway to the city of Solo — one of Indonesia's premier tourist destinations. This cultural city offers a harmonious blend of living history, traditional heritage, performing arts and modern urban life existing side by side.
Solo's popularity as a travel destination is confirmed by official data from the Surakarta City Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Star-rated hotel room occupancy rates in the city reached 58.95% in December 2025, up from the 53.88% recorded in October 2025.
This figure demonstrates the consistently strong public interest to visit and experience the full range of attractions available in the city.
Once arriving in Solo, visitors can explore iconic sites including Mangkunegaran Palace, Kasunanan Surakarta Royal Palace, Laweyan Batik Village, Kauman Batik Village, Balekambang Park, Gede Traditional Market, and the heritage tourism complex De Tjolomadoe. Legendary local culinary spots are also an irreplaceable part of the travel experience in this city also known as the Home of the Bengawan River.
Travel on this service has become even more comfortable, as since 9 December 2024 the Mataram Train operates with New Generation Stainless Steel rolling stock for both Economy and Executive class carriages.
This upgrade delivers a modern travel environment with elegant interiors, ergonomic seating, expanded legroom, plus seats that can be reclined and rotated to face the direction of travel.
These comfort features provide major added value for long distance travellers, allowing passengers to complete the journey without excessive fatigue. With these modern upgraded facilities, the train ride itself has become an integral, enjoyable part of the full holiday experience.
"Mataram Train connects our passengers with countless remarkable destinations across Java. Every city along this route holds its own unique stories, culture, cuisine and tourist charm. That is what makes the journey itself part of the travel experience", stated KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba.
For anyone seeking a relaxed, unrushed weekend break, the Mataram Train offers far more than just transport. This is a journey full of stories, travelling through historic cities and past ever-shifting natural landscapes.
