Bali has once again demonstrated its appeal as a world-class destination. This time, the Island of the Gods has been entrusted to host the 12th Asian Open Water Swimming Championship 2026, scheduled for 13–15 June 2026 along the coastal waters of InterContinental Bali Resort Beach, Jimbaran Bay.

This prestigious event will gather the best swimmers across Asia from 17 countries. The arrival of these elite athletes will not only deliver intense competition on the open water race course, but also represent a key milestone for the development of Sport Tourism in Indonesia.

Ministry of Tourism confirmed this championship aligns with national efforts to drive high-Quality Tourism, one of the government's core priorities for 2026. Beyond operating as a sporting competition, this event is also expected to strengthen Indonesia's standing as a leading Sports Tourism destination in the Asian region.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana emphasized that this tournament carries strategic value for Indonesia's national tourism sector.

"This event also functions as a sport tourism platform that matches the Ministry of Tourism's 2026 flagship program for high-quality tourism," she stated, as quoted from the ministry's official press release.

This championship is not limited to professional athletes. As part of the full event schedule, the A. Stream OWS Series will also be hosted, providing beginner swimmers, sports community groups, and the general public the chance to experience open water swimming first-hand.

Far from only targeting elite athletes, this tournament actively invites local residents to participate and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an international competition.

Kiki Taher, Lead Organiser for both the 12th Asian Open Water Swimming Championship 2026 and A.Stream OWS Series 2026, expressed confidence that hosting this event will deliver positive long-term impacts for the growth of national sports tourism.

"We are confident that with full government support, particularly from the Ministry of Tourism, this initial step will develop into a major milestone for the progress of Indonesian Sport Tourism," stated Kiki.

Substantial economic impact is projected from this championship. The influx of athletes, event officials, participant family members, and visiting spectators is expected to drive higher hotel occupancy rates, local transport usage, and business activity across Bali's culinary sector.

Beyond this, hosting this continental level championship is also expected to increase the average length of stay for international tourists visiting Indonesia.

This will enable broader economic benefits to be felt by local tourism business operators and surrounding communities.

A successful hosting in Bali is also intended to set an example for other tourist destinations across Indonesia. The Ministry of Tourism has identified strong potential to roll out similar international sporting events in other Priority Tourism regions including Lombok, Belitung, and Labuan Bajo.

This initiative is regarded as critical to distribute tourism benefits more evenly nationwide, while also introducing more Indonesian Destinations to global audiences through sport.

Global sport tourism continues to show consistent promising growth. UN Tourism data records that sports related travel expenditure made up approximately 10% of total global tourism spending in 2023, with projections showing this share will rise to 17.5% between 2023 and 2030.

This trend presents a major opportunity for Indonesia to combine the strengths of its sports and tourism sectors. Backed by world-class host destinations such as Bali, the 12th Asian Open Water Swimming Championship 2026 is intended to act as a showcase demonstrating Indonesia's readiness to become a regional sport tourism hub in Asia.
