Car Free Day (CFD), also referred to as Motor Vehicle Free Day in Jakarta, is no longer just an exercise space for residents of the capital city. This regular weekend activity has gradually evolved into a tourist attraction, drawing attention from International Visitors, particularly those coming from Singapore and Malaysia.

This trend shows that Jakarta's CFD has transformed far beyond a simple air pollution reduction policy built around exercise, community gatherings, entertainment, and social interaction. It is now a sought-after experience for travellers visiting the city.

Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung Wibowo confirmed that many visitors from neighbouring countries intentionally set aside time to join CFD before departing for their home countries.

"Lots of people gather here, arrange meetups, and plan their time around Car Free Day. There are also many people from overseas, especially specifically from Singapore and Malaysia. Before they travel back home, they make sure to attend Jakarta's Car Free Day first," Pramono stated during an interview in East Jakarta on Friday.

This statement confirms that CFD has become a core part of Jakarta's urban Tourism experience. Travellers no longer only visit shopping centres and culinary spots, they also come to experience first-hand the lively, social atmosphere of Jakarta's community life on weekends.

According to Pramono, the purpose of CFD has expanded far beyond its original goal of reducing air pollution. This vehicle-free zone has become one of the Favourite Destinations for local residents, domestic visitors, and international tourists.

Responding to this high public demand, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is expanding CFD locations by launching a new vehicle-free zone in the Rasuna Said / Kuningan area. This additional route is designed to reduce overcrowding on the existing Sudirman-Thamrin CFD strip, while also providing an alternative exercise experience for the public.

"For the Car Free Day at Rasuna Said Kuningan, I am certain this will become a new favourite spot for Jakarta residents. People will now be able to choose between the Sudirman-Thamrin route or Rasuna Said. The Rasuna Said circuit is around 7 kilometres long, while the full Sudirman route runs approximately 10 kilometres. This will give people flexible options that suit their needs," Pramono explained.

The Rasuna Said area is assessed to have strong potential as a new weekend activity hub. Alongside its strategic location, the route length is ideal for people who want to run, take a casual walk, or cycle without covering an excessively long distance.

As of now, preparation and upgrading works for the Rasuna Said CFD zone have reached 95% completion. The regional government targets to finish and officially inaugurate this project to coincide with Jakarta's official anniversary celebrations.

With the completed improved infrastructure, the Rasuna Said CFD zone is expected to offer far better comfort compared to the earlier trial runs. This new location forms part of wider efforts to expand healthy, inclusive public spaces for all residents.

Pramono also expressed hope that the CFD programme will not only promote healthy Lifestyles, but also strengthen social connections between residents through the activities held every weekend.

"We hope this will encourage more people in Jakarta to take up running, Jogging, and live healthier lives. Above all else, Car Free Day now exists as a space for people to build and maintain good community relations," Pramono concluded.
