A heated atmosphere filled Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan, Jakarta, as two Indonesian Men's Singles shuttlers faced off in the Round of 16 of the BWF World Tour Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2026. The match between Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan unfolded as a fierce three-game battle.

Coming off peak form, Alwi played aggressively right from the start of the match. However, Jonatan's experience prevailed at critical moments, securing the victory with a final scoreline of 17-21, 21-17, 21-16.

This win advances Jonatan to the quarter-finals and extends his head-to-head record against Alwi to 2-0.

"This was a very tight match, because Alwi is also riding high on confidence after beating Shi Yu Qi last week [at the 2026 Singapore Open - ed]," stated Jonatan, affectionately known as Jojo, in his post-match interview on Thursday.

Right from the first game, Alwi showed no fear going up against the far more seasoned player. The young Indonesian Badminton player took the initiative on attacks, putting Jonatan under consistent pressure.

Alwi built an early 6-3 lead before Jonatan levelled the score at 6-6. Nevertheless, Alwi regained his rhythm and closed the first game interval with an 11-8 advantage.

After the mid-game break, Jonatan slowed the match pace with extended rallies. Alwi was able to anticipate this adjustment, holding his lead to take the first game 21-17.

Entering the second game, Jonatan showed his class and composure. The 5th seed played with greater patience to build attacks and took control of the match rhythm.

Jojo pulled ahead 9-6, holding a narrow 11-10 lead at the interval. Following the break, he executed effective play to extend his lead to 15-11 before sealing the second game by the identical 21-17 score.

Tensions peaked in the deciding third game. Alwi returned to his aggressive style and jumped to an early 6-3 lead, before Jonatan gradually clawed back to level the contest.

Both players traded points back and forth, until Alwi closed the deciding game interval with a slim 11-10 lead.

Jonatan's experience proved the difference after the break, as he neutralised Alwi's aggression and played with sharp efficiency in the closing stages of the match. He pulled ahead to 19-16 before locking in the victory at 21-16.

Jonatan stands as the only remaining Indonesian Men's Singles representative to progress to the quarter-final stage.

Jonatan's success adds to the Indonesian contingent's positive run into the quarter-finals.

With seven representatives still in the tournament, Indonesia retains strong chances of claiming the title on home soil.
