The first Giant Panda Cub born in Indonesia has been confirmed to be gradually introduced to the public starting late May 2026. The arrival of this giant panda cub named Satrio Wiratama, or Rio, marks a historic moment as well as a New Attraction for Educational Wildlife Tourism in Indonesia.

Rio was born on 27 November 2025 to giant panda pair Hu Chun and Cai Tao, who have been part of the Indonesia-China Conservation cooperation program since 2017. Since his birth, Rio has stood as a symbol of success for the loan breeding program operated at Taman Safari.

Now at approximately six months old, Rio is showing steady positive development. On his 170th day of life, his body weight reached 11.5 kilograms, while his health condition remains under regular continuous monitoring by the resident veterinarian team and animal caretakers.

Rio is also growing increasingly active, and has begun walking with more stable balance. On multiple occasions, he has been observed sniffing his mother's bamboo, appearing curious to try the food himself.

According to drh. Bongot Huaso Mulia, Vice President of Life and Science at Taman Safari Indonesia, this progress falls within normal growth patterns for young giant pandas.

To support this developmental phase, Rio has been introduced to bamboo shoots as a natural teether, alongside 17 varieties of local Indonesian bamboo including ampel bamboo, yellow bamboo and young fresh bamboo.

Rio still receives his primary nutrition from his mother's milk, as giant panda cubs typically only transition to a full bamboo diet between 12 and 18 months of age. This feeding regime is critical to maintain optimal growth and immune system function.

Aswin Sumampau, Chief Director of Taman Safari Indonesia, confirmed that the public introduction process for Rio will be rolled out in phases starting late May.

Initially Rio will only be on public display for a small number of hours daily, before full visitor access is opened during the June to July School Holiday period.

"We are preparing for the launch at the end of this month, late May. This will be rolled out gradually. At first Rio will only be visible for around two to three hours each day. Our target is that by the June-July holidays, every visitor arriving at Taman Safari will be able to meet him," he explained.

Rio's arrival not only creates a major new Tourism Attraction, but also reinforces Indonesia's position within global wildlife Conservation cooperation.
