If weekends are usually synonymous with malls or amusement parks, now there's an educational Tourism Alternative trending in Kudus Regency, Central Java. The new Library building of Kudus Regency has transformed into a family Favorite Destination, especially for parents wanting to introduce reading culture early to children.
Since officially opening to the public, community enthusiasm keeps rising. Mutrikah, Head of Kudus Regency Archives and Library Service, noted the visitation trend shows a positive curve, particularly on weekends.
"Public interest in visiting Kudus Library has grown since its opening. Especially on holidays, many parents bring their toddlers and elementary school children to visit," she said.
This phenomenon stands out amid the dominance of gadgets and digital entertainment, as literacy spaces regain attention as affordable, comfortable, and beneficial family recreation spots.
Remains Open During Ramadan
Notably, during Ramadan, library services continue operating every Saturday and Sunday with limited hours from 08:00 to 12:00 WIB. Despite shorter hours, visitation interest remains strong.
Management plans to expand promotions and host creative activities to attract more visitors.
"The new building and spacious parking area can facilitate various activities to Draw people to the library," she explained.
Plans include book bazaars and MSME events. Collaborations with literacy and education communities are being intensified to make the area not just a reading space but a hub for ideas and creativity.
Economical Holiday, Education Gained
For Kudus residents, the library now offers quality budget-friendly recreation. Visitor Indra deliberately brings his two children on weekends.
"Our goal is affordable leisure while introducing books to children, cultivating reading habits over screen time," he said.
Meanwhile, fourth-grader Arroyyan enjoys lingering due to the comfortable atmosphere.
"The space is truly cozy—I can read while lounging on sofas. Many spots allow relaxed, enjoyable reading," said Arroyyan, visiting with his mother.
He even borrowed dozens of children's storybooks to read and appreciate the illustrations.
Four Buildings, Thousands of Books
The new library complex features four functionally distinct buildings. Building A serves as a reference-only reading room. Others include multimedia rooms, adult reading areas, and uniquely designed children's reading spaces resembling educational playrooms.
Kudus Regional Library's current collection spans approximately 34,000 titles across tens of thousands of copies, covering children's books, general literature, academic references, and self-development materials.
Constructed with Rp8.43 billion from the National Library Special Allocation Fund and completed mid-December 2025, this investment now shows returns through surging community visits.
With modern design, comfortable spaces, and evolving creative programs, Kudus Regional Library transcends book borrowing. It has transformed into a literacy Tourism Destination relevant for today's generation—where families enjoy quality time while building early reading habits.
