The midday sun blazed brightly as tourist boats began docking at Ketapang Pier, Lampung. Yet the sweltering heat did not deter travelers waiting to cross over to Pahawang Island, one of the most popular Marine Tourist Destinations in Lampung.

This small island located in Punduh Pidada District, Pesawaran Regency is renowned for its crystal clear waters, stretches of White Sand, and well-preserved underwater scenery. Many visitors even refer to Pahawang as Lampung's own "Maldives", thanks to its turquoise ocean waters and peaceful atmosphere far removed from the bustle of urban life.

Before the boats departed, visitors' attention was caught by the antics of local children on the shoreline. Nimbly, they would dive down to the seabed to retrieve coins and banknotes thrown into the water by onlookers.

This impromptu display offers an authentic coastal experience that has become increasingly rare in major cities. These children appear completely at one with the ocean, as if they have grown up alongside the waves and waters surrounding Pahawang since infancy.

The journey to Pahawang Island departs from Ketapang Pier, taking approximately 30 to 45 minutes aboard traditional wooden boats. Throughout the crossing, travelers are treated to sweeping views of the tropical ocean, with soft sea breezes making the ride feel calm and relaxing.

As an added delight, visitors may also catch sight of flying fish, locally called torani, leaping clear above the water surface from time to time.

"These fish can glide quite far, around 5 to 8 meters," explained tour leader Ical.

As the boat approaches the island, the cluster of tropical islets comes clearly into view. The unspoiled surroundings and fresh coastal air greet visitors immediately as the vessel pulls up to Pahawang Island's dock.

Snorkeling Paradise: The Nemo Garden Spot

Pahawang Island's main Draw lies in the beauty of its underwater ecosystem. The relatively calm sea conditions make this destination ideal for snorkeling, even for first-time visitors.

Travelers no longer need to search for the best snorkeling locations, as local tour operators have curated a selection of favourite spots with spectacular underwater vistas.

One of the most beloved locations is Nemo Garden, a snorkeling area home to schools of bright orange clownfish. These fish are remarkably tame, and will often swim close to people snorkelling in the area.

Alongside clownfish, visitors will also encounter colourful Coral Reefs, diverse tropical fish species, and perfectly clear glass-like waters that make this spot a favourite for underwater photography enthusiasts.

Travel Costs For Pahawang Island

One of the reasons Pahawang Island has grown in popularity with visitors is its very budget-friendly travel costs.

Renting a wooden boat with capacity for around 10 people costs between IDR 1,000,000 to IDR 1,800,000. This price typically already includes snorkelling equipment, on-trip documentation, and lunch.

For travelers wishing to explore further afield, speed boat services are also available at approximately IDR 2,800,000 for a 5-passenger capacity boat.

"Most people who book speed boats don't actually go to Pahawang, they head to Wayang Island instead. That location is much further from Pahawang, which is why they use speed boats," added Ical.

Aside from day trip options, Pahawang Island also offers a range of accommodation, from local family homestays to exclusive beachfront cottages.

Homestay rates start from IDR 150,000 up to IDR 300,000 per night. Meanwhile villas or cottages with more complete facilities are priced starting from IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,500,000 per night.

Notably, tourist facilities on the island are well developed. Electricity, clean Running water, mobile network coverage, air conditioning and Wi-Fi are all available at most accommodation providers.

The warm hospitality of local residents is another reason many travelers choose to extend their stay on Pahawang Island.

Relaxing Sunsets And Tranquil Island Atmosphere

Pahawang Island is more than just a Marine Tourism destination - it is also the perfect place to find peace and quiet.

As the sun begins to set, the sky slowly turns warm orange and the whole island falls into a gentle calm. Fishing boats return to the harbour, while the sound of crashing waves becomes the natural soundtrack to the evening.

Here, time feels like it moves slower. Many travelers do not visit only for snorkelling, but to soak in this quiet serenity that is almost impossible to find in busy cities.

Siger Tower: The Iconic Lampung Tourist Landmark

Beyond Pahawang Island, Lampung is home to another iconic must-visit destination: Siger Tower.

This 32 metre tall structure stands atop Gamping Hill in Bakauheni, serving as the official landmark of Lampung and the welcome gateway for visitors arriving from Java Island.

From the Siger Tower complex, visitors can enjoy elevated panoramic views over the Sunda Strait and all activity at Bakauheni Port.

"Please enjoy all the tourist destinations we have here. I pray that all of you will return home with wonderful memories of Lampung, especially South Lampung," stated I Nyoman Setiawan, Head of the South Lampung Regency Tourism Office.

Pahawang Island and Siger Tower are proof that Lampung holds countless hidden gems, well worth adding to the bucket list of any nature and marine travel enthusiast.
