Janice Tjen Exits Early at 2026 WTA 1000 Rome.

Janice Tjen's journey at the Internazionali BNL D'Italia 2026 ended prematurely. The Indonesian women's tennis player exited in the first round after losing to United States representative Peyton Stearns.

Playing on Court 13 at Foro Italico, Rome, Janice battled for one hour and 25 minutes before surrendering in straight sets 4-6, 4-6.

In the opening set, Stearns displayed aggression and built momentum with two aces. Despite this, Janice maintained pressure through solid serving, achieving a 62.1% first-serve percentage.

However, Stearns proved more effective in crucial moments. The 24-year-old from Cincinnati converted two of five break points to secure the first set.

Entering the second set, Janice attempted a comeback. She played more boldly, firing five aces while improving her first-serve accuracy to 66.7%.

Unfortunately, consistency proved decisive. Stearns committed zero double faults, while Janice's two double faults significantly disrupted her rhythm.

Stearns also demonstrated superior returns and again capitalized on two of five break point opportunities to seal the straight-set victory.

This result sends the world No. 49 into the second round, where she'll face compatriot Madison Keys, the 17th seed who received a first-round bye.

For Janice, this early exit in Rome follows disappointing results at March's American tour events - Merida Open, Indian Wells, Miami, and Charleston - where she also fell in early rounds.

Nevertheless, Janice's season shows positive development. The world No. 40 Indonesian tennis player reached the second round at Madrid Open and displayed competitiveness at WTA 1000 level.

Beyond singles, Janice shows doubles promise. With Aldila Sutjiadi, she reached the Women's Doubles quarterfinals at Madrid Open.

The pair is expected to reunite in Rome after being spotted training together in recent days.
