Atletico Madrid refused to surrender in front of their home crowd after holding Arsenal to a 1-1 Draw in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League UEFA semifinal at the Estadio Metropolitano in the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2026 WIB. A high-tension match featuring two penalty goals leaves the battle for a final ticket wide open.
Arsenal took the lead in the 44th minute after Viktor Gyokeres was fouled by David Hancko inside the penalty area. Gyokeres stepped up as the taker and successfully beat Jan Oblak. Arsenal led 1-0.
Before the goal, the duel had already been fiery from the start of the match. Arsenal threatened first through the movement of Noni Madueke, who sent the ball towards the far post, but Piero Hincapie's volleyed effort still went wide. Atletico responded with a fierce shot by Julian Alvarez in front of the penalty box, but David Raya made a brilliant save.

Entering the second half, Atletico played much more aggressively. A chance came in the 53rd minute when Ademola Lookman's shot was parried by Raya. The rebound couldn't be capitalized on by Antoine Griezmann as it was blocked by Arsenal's defensive line.
Three minutes later, the momentum shifted. The referee reviewed the VAR for a potential handball by Ben White in the penalty area. After checking, Atletico were awarded a penalty.
Alvarez flawlessly executed the opportunity to level the score. His powerful shot was beyond Raya's reach. The score changed to 1-1. The stadium roared, while Arsenal lost control of the game they had built.
Atletico almost turned the game around shortly after when Griezmann's shot hit the crossbar. Lookman also got a chance after receiving a pass from Marcos Llorente, but Raya again came to the rescue for the visiting team.
No further goals were created until the end of the match. With this Draw Result, everything will be decided in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium in the early hours of Wednesday, May 6, 2026 WIB, when Arsenal hosts Atletico.
