The cherry blossom season has long been associated with Japan. However, in recent years, South Korea has started to steal the spotlight as an Alternative Destination offering a similar experience, but with more diverse nuances.
2026 brings new dynamics. According to a Korea Times report cited on March 26, 2026, Cherry Blossoms in South Korea are expected to bloom earlier than usual. Global warming is said to accelerate blooming time by approximately one to seven days compared to the annual average.
This spring journey begins in the southern regions. Seogwipo becomes the starting point, where cherry blossoms bloom first. From there, the wave of pink moves to major cities like Busan, Daegu, and Ulsan, before finally reaching Seoul around April 3, 2026.

For locals and tourists alike, this moment is more than just a Natural Phenomenon. Cherry blossom season is an eagerly anticipated annual celebration. Many willingly take leave just to walk beneath rows of flowering trees, enjoying an atmosphere that lasts only days.
Across South Korea, spring festivals emerge, delivering experiences that are not only visual but emotional. Among the most iconic is Jinhae in South Gyeongsang Province. Each spring, this district transforms into a sea of cherry blossoms with hundreds of thousands of trees blooming simultaneously. The Jinhae Gunhangje Festival from March 27 to April 5, 2026 becomes a major attraction, featuring flower tunnels and panoramas straight out of romantic films.
Nearby, Gyeonghwa Station's old railway line offers a kilometer-long walk beneath arched cherry trees, complete with aesthetically retro Train vibes. Along Yeojwacheon River, the atmosphere turns dramatic with heart-shaped lights illuminating at night, making it a favorite spot for couples.
Moving to coastal areas, Namhae presents a different color palette. Here, cherry blossoms blend with fields of yellow canola flowers against blue sea backdrops, creating vibrant landscapes. Its coastal road lined with over a thousand cherry trees is listed among "Korea's 100 Most Beautiful Roads".
Meanwhile, in downtown Seoul, cherry blossom experiences come with urban flair. Yeouido becomes the celebration hub during the Spring Flower Festival from April 3–7, 2026. Along Yeouiseo Road, thousands of cherry trees stand parallel to the Han River, offering a brief escape from city bustle.
Nearby, Seokchon Lake provides equally iconic views. Its 2.5-kilometer lakeside path transforms into a pink tunnel with the towering Lotte World Tower as backdrop.
For quieter settings, western Seoul's Gyeongui Line Forest Trail offers a solution. This former railway track now features a 6.3-kilometer linear park filled with cherry trees, trendy cafes, and intimate relaxation spaces away from major festival crowds.
Meanwhile, Japan's cherry blossom season continues traditionally. Cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto begin blooming from mid to late March 2026. Yet like South Korea, Japan's cherry beauty remains fleeting—tourists typically have under two weeks from initial bloom to peak (mankai).
This makes cherry blossom chasing uniquely special. Witnessing blooming sakura isn't merely a destination, but an unrepeatable moment when time, season, and journey converge into a brief yet memorable experience.
