The absence of Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal's national team squad for two friendlies against the United States and Mexico has drawn attention. This marks a significant break for the captain in the international calendar ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo was confirmed absent for the friendlies after his name was omitted from the squad list announced by the FPF through its official website on Friday.
This decision follows coach Jorge Jesus' statement earlier this month, mentioning Ronaldo flew to Spain for treatment of a hamstring injury.

The 41-year-old striker missed Al Nassr's victories over Neom and Al Khaleej in the Saudi Arabian League.
Al Nassr was scheduled to face Al Wasl from the United Arab Emirates in the AFC Champions League Two before the match was postponed due to conflict in the Middle East.
Ronaldo has captained Portugal since 2008 and remains the nation's all-time top scorer with 143 goals.
Portugal is scheduled to face either New Caledonia, Jamaica, or the Democratic Republic of Congo in their World Cup group opener at NRG Stadium, Houston, on June 17.
Alongside one of these three nations, Portugal will also play Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.
Ronaldo previously faced potential absence from the tournament's first two games after receiving a red card during qualifiers against Ireland.
However, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee suspended the final two matches of his three-game ban during a one-year probationary period.
Despite Ronaldo's absence, Portugal maintains a blend of youth and experience.
Players like Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leão, and Gonçalo Ramos are expected to lead the attack during these friendlies. These matches offer Jorge Jesus an opportunity to test squad depth without their iconic figure.
This situation provides Portugal with evaluation opportunities while simultaneously highlighting one reality: even without Ronaldo, his influence continues to shape the team's trajectory toward 2026.
