Marc Marquez's spectacular resurgence in the 2025 season has earned him a nomination for the Laureus World Sports Awards 2026 in the World Sportsman of the Year category. One of Marquez's competitors is Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Ousmane Dembele.

In that elite list, the seven-time MotoGP world Champion stands alongside global icons, including Dembele, winner of the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Their competition at the Laureus World Sports Awards 2026 presents a symbolic duel between MotoGP track speed and Football magic.

The Resurgence Season That Changed Everything

The 2025 season became a redemption stage for Marquez. He recorded 11 wins from 17 main races plus 14 Sprint victories. He accumulated 545 total points, securing his seventh premier-class title.

This championship felt special as his first since 2019, before a series of long-term injuries derailed his career.

Despite missing the final four rounds due to injury, Marquez's point tally remained unreachable by rivals.

His journey wasn't risk-free. After 11 years with Repsol Honda Team, Marquez made the bold decision to leave his comfort zone and join Gresini Racing, which used Ducati motorcycles in 2024.

This move paved his path to a factory rider seat at Ducati Lenovo Team in 2025.

Rivalry with Global Icons

In this year's nominations, Marquez faces not only Dembele but also Spanish Tennis Player Carlos Alcaraz, Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis, and four-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar.

Yet the spotlight shines brightest on the Marquez-Dembele duel—two athletes from different disciplines who both dominated 2025 absolutely.

While Marquez ruled MotoGP with trademark precision and aggression, Dembele conquered the World Football stage with its most prestigious individual honor.

No Stranger to Laureus

Marquez isn't new to the Laureus stage. He claimed the Breakthrough of the Year award in 2014 after his sensational MotoGP debut season.

Since then, he's been nominated multiple times for World Sportsman of the Year and Comeback of the Year.

Now, after weathering injury storms and doubts, he stands again among sports' greatest names.

Laureus World Sports Awards 2026 winners will be announced on April 21 next year.

Will Marquez's dramatic comeback be enough to surpass Dembele and other superstars? The sports world will soon know.
