West Java is indeed synonymous with mountains, tea plantations, and legendary culinary delights. But for those who enjoy Traveling with a spiritual touch, this province has another equally impressive side: a lineup of mosques with iconic architecture and rich historical narratives.

More than just places of worship, these mosques also serve as aesthetic, photogenic Religious Tourism Destinations full of meaning. Perfect for ngabuburit (pre-breaking-fast activities), short Ramadan escapes, or simply recharging spiritual energy.

Here are five unique mosques in West Java to include in your travel itinerary.

1. Al Jabbar Grand Mosque – Bandung City

Al Jabbar Grand Mosque became Bandung's new icon since its inauguration on December 30, 2022. Standing on approximately 6-7 hectares of land with a capacity for 60,000 worshippers, this mosque instantly captured attention with its futuristic design.

What makes it unique is the building's appearance of floating atop an artificial lake that also functions as flood control. At dusk, light reflections on the water create a dramatic, Instagram-worthy atmosphere.

Inside, 99 light installations represent the 99 Names of Allah (Asmaul Husna). Its facade blends modern style with contemporary Islamic architecture and traditional West Javanese batik motifs.

Notably, the lower floor houses the Rasulullah Gallery Museum, showcasing Prophet Muhammad SAW's journey and the history of Islam's spread in Indonesia, including West Java. Making it not just a Religious Tourism site, but also an educational destination.

2. Sang Cipta Rasa Grand Mosque – Cirebon City

If you appreciate historical destinations, this mosque is a must-visit. Sang Cipta Rasa Grand Mosque is one of West Java's oldest mosques, established in 1480 by Sunan Gunung Jati.

Located within Cirebon's Kasepuhan Palace complex, its atmosphere feels profoundly classical and sacred. The structure features nine small doors believed to symbolize the nine Islamic saints (Wali Songo).

A unique surviving tradition is Adzan Pitu – the Friday prayer call performed simultaneously by seven muezzins. A rare spiritual experience hardly found elsewhere.

For enthusiasts of cultural exploration and Islamic History in the archipelago, this site functions like a time machine transporting you back to the 15th century.

3. Golden Dome Mosque (Dian Al-Mahri Mosque) – Depok City

This mosque has long been a Religious Tourism highlight in Greater Jakarta. Called the Golden Dome Mosque because its five domes are coated with 2-3mm thick 24-karat gold.

Initiated by Hj. Dian Djuriah Maimun Al-Rashid in 1999 and completed seven years later, it features Middle Eastern architecture with massive domes, tall minarets, and characteristic Islamic geometric ornaments.

Its spacious, well-organized complex suits Family Tourism. Beyond worship, it frequently hosts religious education, preaching activities, and events.

Morning visits are recommended for cooler temperatures and optimal photography lighting.

4. Al-Irsyad Mosque – West Bandung Regency

This mosque is a favorite among minimalist modern architecture lovers. Unlike conventional mosques, Al-Irsyad has no dome. Its square roof symbolizes the Kaaba.

Wall perforations form Arabic calligraphy spelling "Lā ilāha illā llāh" (There is no god but Allah) when sunlight passes through – creating a striking visual effect.

The pillar-free interior creates visually clean, expansive prayer spaces. Surrounded by water ponds and vegetation, its atmosphere feels cool and tranquil.

The mosque has won International Awards including the FuturArc Green Leadership award 2011 and was Top 5 in Building of The Year 2010.

Ideal for eco-friendly architecture concepts and minimalist design enthusiasts.

5. Sri Soewarto Boat Mosque – Sukabumi Regency

While mosques typically feature domes, Sukabumi has one shaped like a giant purple ship. Located in Purwasari Village, Cicurug District.

The main building resembles a complete boat structure. This concept instantly captures travelers' attention.

Beyond worship, the surrounding area offers water recreation facilities and picturesque photo spots. Perfect for combining religious tourism with family trips.
