The move of Raheem Sterling to Feyenoord Rotterdam presents an intriguing story in the European winter transfer market. Behind the surprising decision to join the Eredivisie lies the significant influence of Robin van Persie.

Van Persie, former striker for Arsenal and Manchester United who now manages Feyenoord, is widely credited as the decisive factor in negotiations.

"After extensive discussions with Robin, I'm confident Feyenoord is where I can find happiness and become a key part of the team. Playing abroad represents a fresh challenge that I'm ready to embrace. Frankly, I'm tremendously excited to begin," stated Sterling.

Van Persie's faith in Sterling isn't unfounded. Sterling's extensive Premier League and European competition experience is viewed as a potential title-winning difference-maker.

"Naturally, securing a player of Raheem's caliber is an extraordinary achievement for us. His record speaks for itself - a game-changer who'll be invaluable as we pursue our second-half season objectives," Van Persie affirmed.

Sterling signed with the Dutch club until the conclusion of the 2025/2026 Season.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City winger became a free agent after departing Chelsea in January 2026.

For the 31-year-old, this situation offered a rare career-defining moment.

"As a free agent, I finally have agency over my career path after years without it. I'll carefully discuss with coaches to understand their envisioned role, ensuring I deliver real value in this new chapter," Sterling commented via Feyenoord's website on Friday.

Feyenoord currently sits second in the 2025/2026 Eredivisie Standings, trailing PSV Eindhoven by 17 points.

Given this substantial gap, Sterling's arrival is expected to bolster the team's attacking prowess during the season's latter half.

Sterling departed Chelsea through Mutual Termination, receiving compensation for his remaining £300,000-per-week contract covering 18 months.

Now, a fresh challenge awaits in Rotterdam, with Van Persie's trust forming the foundation for his Dutch journey.
