Indonesia has once again demonstrated its dominance in global competitive speed climbing. Veddriq Leonardo claimed the championship title at the 2026 Chamonix World Climbing Series after defeating fellow Indonesian compatriot Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi in the final round held in Chamonix, France on Sunday, 12 July 2026.
Veddriq secured the gold medal after recording a finish time of 4.89 seconds in the final match. Meanwhile Antasyafi completed the climbing course in 5.11 seconds to take the silver medal. This result saw Indonesia claim both top podium positions, further cementing the Red and White nation's strength in the men's speed category.
Indonesia's dominance was even more pronounced as both athletes delivered consistent performance from the qualification rounds all the way through to the final. This all-Indonesian final also stood as one of the main highlights of the Chamonix World Climbing leg.
The bronze medal was won by Japanese climber Ryo Omasa, who secured third place after posting a time of 4.701 seconds in the bronze medal playoff.
This victory carries deeply special meaning for Veddriq. The 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist has finally returned to international title success after navigating a challenging recovery period from injury.
"This feels incredible. I am so grateful. This is my first gold medal since the Olympic Games, and it has taken a long time to reach this point again. I want to thank every single person who supported me. This achievement means everything to me," stated Veddriq, quoted from the official World Climbing website.
Veddriq explained that his path to the winner's podium on this occasion was far from ideal. Ongoing injury prevented him from completing full training programmes, with extremely limited climbing practice time ahead of competing across the Madrid, Krakow and Chamonix competition legs.
"I couldn't climb at my full standard because I have not been able to train at maximum capacity. I gave everything I had, and this is an extraordinary outcome for me. I barely even touched a climbing wall during practice, then went straight into competing in Madrid, Krakow, and now here in Chamonix. I am truly thankful for this result," he added.
Meanwhile, Antasyafi has once again proven himself as one of Indonesia's most promising emerging speed climbers. His consistent run through to the final demonstrates the depth of Indonesia's national squad ahead of the upcoming international competition calendar.
Securing both gold and silver medals in Chamonix confirms that Indonesia remains one of the world's leading powers in men's speed climbing. This result also boosts the national team's confidence heading into future World Climbing Series legs, as they build towards their core targets at the World Championships and upcoming Olympic Games.
