Indonesian national Futsal team coach Hector Souto considers the final of the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup a historic moment, not only for his team but also for Asian futsal atmosphere. Though acknowledging Iran's superiority in penalties, Souto stated global public support seemed to favor Indonesia.

The final held at Indonesia Arena, Jakarta on Saturday, February 7, 2026, unfolded dramatically. Indonesia drew 5-5 through normal and extra time before losing 4-5 in penalties. The match showcased the bravery and maturity of Garuda Futsal Squad facing one of Asia's strongest teams.

"In my opinion, only one country wanted Iran to win today. Worldwide, many supported Indonesia," Souto said during the post-match press conference.

Despite exceeding expectations by reaching the final, the Spanish coach refused to be swept by euphoria. He emphasized this achievement must be met with level-headedness and humility.

"We must stay grounded. If this tournament were repeated in two weeks, we might not reach the final," he said.

According to Souto, Asian futsal features fierce competition. Many countries possess squad quality and depth that make tournament results unpredictable. Therefore, he views consistency as Indonesia's greatest future challenge.

Souto also stressed the importance of fundamental improvements. He highlighted training facilities, especially grassroots-level pitch quality, which he deemed inadequate for modern high-tempo futsal.

"Grassroots-level pitches aren't good enough. We need facility investments so players can develop and play at parquet-level speed," he stated.

For him, infrastructure enhancement isn't merely complementary but the primary foundation for Indonesian futsal to sustainably compete at Asia's elite level. Without proper facility support, player development would progress slowly.

Looking ahead, Souto chose realism. He affirmed Indonesian National Futsal Team's focus remains on process rather than mere results.

"Regarding next targets... as always happens. Come to training camps, prepare optimally, compete," said the Spanish coach.

"Perhaps I could say, sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don't yet," he concluded.
