Not only the value, but the volume of player moves also surged. Throughout 2025, 24,558 international transfers were recorded in men's football.
This number increased by over 7 percent compared to 2024 and is the highest number ever recorded.
When calculated across all competition levels, from men's and women's professional football to the amateur level, the total number of cross-country moves was 86,158 players. This new record reflects the increasing openness of global talent mobility.
A series of high-value transfers also colored the 2025 player market. One of the most prominent was the move of German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen to Premier League Champions, Liverpool.
The Reds recruited the 22-year-old player for a transfer fee of £100 million sterling (approximately IDR 2.30 trillion), plus performance bonuses of up to £16 million or around IDR 369 billion. Liverpool emerged as one of the main actors in this year's transfer market.
Besides Wirtz, the list of the five most expensive international transfers in 2025 includes Hugo Ekitike's move from Eintracht Frankfurt to Liverpool, Jhon Duran's move from Aston Villa to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, Benjamin Sesko's move from RB Leipzig to Manchester United, and Nick Woltemade's move from VfB Stuttgart to Newcastle United.
Significant growth was also seen in the Women's Football sector. Throughout 2025, 2,440 international transfers were recorded, an increase of over six percent compared to the previous year.
Total transfer spending reached $28.6 million USD or approximately IDR 479 billion, surging over 80 percent compared to 2024 and once again breaking the record.
One of the most historic moments came from the transfer of Mexican winger Lizbeth Ovalle. American club Orlando Pride recruited Ovalle from Tigres for a transfer fee of $1.5 million USD (approximately IDR 25 billion). This became the world record for the most expensive transfer in the history of Women's Football.
Beyond the professional level, player movement also increased sharply. FIFA recorded 59,162 amateur players moving to foreign clubs throughout 2025. This figure rose by 9.4 percent compared to the previous year and is the highest record for the amateur football category.
Overall, these figures confirm that the 2025 transfer market is not just about big spending, but a reflection of the increasing globalization and commercialization of World Football.
